Captains Call pricing... what’s a reasonable range?

Post by dirtydozen13 »

I just got a quote of 10 hrs (@145/hr) plus $2700 for parts to install a Corsa exhaust on my 2001 246 with a Merc 7.4. Am I crazy in thinking that’s hella expensive?

What have others paid in here for their aftermarket CC’s?

Don't know if that is expensive or not... but it is worth it.

No idea if that is a good price, but USUALLY you get what you pay for, see if you can find a competitive quote and get references. This should be a difficult install and if it isn't done correctly could cause serious problems. This isn't just a radio install for example.
I would have pegged the labor around $90-$100 an hour but it depends on what part of the country you are in.
Check out their dealer locator for a different bid.

$145 an hour is crazy high, but I think what they are doing is either bidding the job super high because in reality they really dont want to do it and hope you'll go away to someone else, or...
padding the bid in the event it takes longer than 10 hours..

I would ask them how many times the shop has done it in the past. Also, is the tech the same guy ( highly doubtful)

And regardless of who does it, I'd get a written guarantee as to who is responsible and covers the cost of a screwup. You'll only get one shot at this. Once the holes are cut, they can't be moved! I would be pretty nervous of ANYone, regardless their level of experience and expertise cutting holes in my transom.

Me? I'd buy a different boat with CC if I wanted it that bad. But that's me.

Have you called Corsa to price just what the components will cost? I'm thinking A7 had his 263 done for somewhere around $3500. And Shrffdeputy had his 252 done last summer for about the same amount ( I think..). Hopefully they'll jump in, but both are on vacation this week!

I'm in the camp where is it's a job using a saw, and if it involves the transom, it needs to be done by the factory. I won't let my dealer install underwater lights. Not because I don't trust them...but I don't trust anybody with the safety of my boat. We can get far away from shore.....
The only way I would install a CC would to be by ordering a new boat.

That's just my opinion. I'm sure others have had good luck with an aftermarket install, but it's just not in my DNA to let Joe Schmoe cut my boat.

I contacted Corsa directly and the price for my 2008 222 with a 6.2 was $2150 shipped. They use 3M 4200 sealant on the exposed core of the boat after drilling the holes to seal it back up. The sales guy sent me all the diagrams with measurements and instructions, I'm going to do it myself. I don't think it's for the average handy man though lol I used my mill and made an aluminum collar with a hole cut in it same diameter as the hole saw, but I made the hole on the correct angle so I can hold the collar flat against the boat and start the hole on the correct angle. It isn't a straight through hole....

I paid $3,327 for parts and labor for captains call to be installed. Hardin Marine had the best price by far (pic included). I had a local marina do the install.

OK, a little re-write here...
These two guys could take a saw to my boat anytime, and I would not think twice.
I would do my part, which would be trying to perfect the lemonade  .

It simply raises the exhaust outlets above the water line for sound. No performance advantages.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I don't like these systems. There are two boats (non Cobalts) in our marina that have these systems. We were out in a bay about 3/4 mile from the breakwater exit of our marina last Sunday evening listening to music and talking when one of them came out onto the lake and headed past the bay at full tilt and continued south. the sound was so loud, I couldn't believe it is allowed. We were able to hear the loud exhaust long after we could no longer see the boat.

I was just thinking that there is nothing that destroys the tranquility and relaxation of floating on anchor on a quiet evening than a boat roaring by with a CC system. I'd never own one.

It's all personal taste. That's the beauty of the Corsa system is you can still divert it through the prop for quiet exhaust at the push of a switch. I had an IMP 310 Viper with just straight thru hull exhaust and it sounded awesome, but there were times I wish I had Silent Choice. It's a pretty common sound at LOTO and 99% of the time I'm all for it 8-)
