Do luxury car brands under power their cars? No usually brands like Lexus, Caddy, Lincoln offer the more powerful engine option standard in their cars/suv's over the Chevy, Toyota, Ford brands they own. Does the consumer need it? No but they want to offer you the best ride quality for the vehicle.

I view Cobalt as a luxury boat brand. So I expect the same from them. To me a boat that has a top speed in the 40's is underpowered. I have seen real test results where the new A29 has a top speed of 43mph with the 430hp VP motor. To me that is an absolute deal breaker. That puts cruising speeds in the 25mph range. Maybe that is "good enough" on a small lake. But on a lake like mine where I can drive 10-15 miles just to go put gas in the boat. It is not enough.
I agree - it would be fun to see Cobalt leverage their Volvo relationship and drive some innovation in this area. Maybe something like a pair of supercharged 2.7L inline four cylinders that put out 250+ hp each as a way of making the 28-32 foot range easier to handle and better in performance? In another five years, it'll be tough to buy a car that isn't turbocharged, supercharged, or electric, so the might as well start thinking about it now.

I'm sorry but this boat is Fugly! The angular design, both inside and out, and the bloated weight has Malibu engineering written all over it. Look at the rear hull design...this is a Malibu with Cobalt branding. It's a disgrace that they let this monstrosity into the Cobalt R lineup!

The cookie from the reveal party left me feeling pretty much the same way the boat did--ok, but not overly excited.

They do a great job of R5 shaming customers, lol. The R6 just looks like a Cobalt and a Malibu has a baby. Nothing really flows together like the R5. Still can’t get over (or see over likely) the R6 helm.

The R5 guy in the second video "... takes some getting used to". Didn't know about the drop in cooler. Miss that from our 2004 Bryant.

It’s a significant departure from the model he owns. I had the same thought when I first saw pictures and videos but I think I’ll reserve judgement until I sit in it and experience the materials, fit and finish etc. The side of the hull to the stern looks sort of square compared to R5, but might just be the foul or of the boat in the video. Also, swim platform looks like it’s 6 - 8” higher off the water than my boat. Again, have to wait and see it in person.

In the video, it seems the bow is more "nose up" instead of bending down a bit - kind of liked that.

Small thing but I do like that the seat cushion doesn’t have to be raised to get into the head area like we have to in our R7. I do also like the drop in cooler.
