I completely agree. As soon as I can find a A28 under 100k. Might be time to think about an upgrade

It needs the arch too. I can’t go from a full arch to topless

I'm not sure about the right engine TG. That’s one very heavy boat, and that's the old 6.0l 380 which is about 25% less ooomph than the current 380.
I'm guessing 45 mph with that set up.
It would have to be about 45-50k cheap for my tastes.

Believe it or not T the A28’s dry weight is almost identical to the R7. In fact the A28 is a little less. So I would guess upper 40’s with a full tank and gear then 50 with a empty tank and gear.

I completely agree I would never pay 80k for that boat. It would need a full interior change out and an arch installed. So easily 10K worth of work to make me happy. And I’m not doing that to an 80k boat. Maybe a 50k boat.

My mistake. From a prior conversation from my dealer (they broke BOTH of the rear waterline fins unloading a new A28 a few years ago...which they glassed and fixed😳), I was under the impression that it weighed a lot more. That’s what I get for posting without checking specs first 🤐.
Then the engine is in the ballpark as you stateed.

What are those fins for? Is that a "wake gate" type of thing? I've never looked at an A series up close. Only on the lake and in pictures.

I don't know how the A25/A28 could be called outdated or grandpa's styling. The reason the A25 and A28 went out of production is because of the cost of the hydraulic swim platform and the five-piece mold process to get that exclusive rear styling. The R5 simply cannibalized the A25 on price (and similar with the R7/R30 to the A28). The A25 is 30% more money than the R5 and the average new boat buyer doesn't see the premium in those features. Having owned an 2011 A25, then a 2017 R5, and now a 2018 A25, there is still not another boat on the water under 30' I'd rather have than my A25.
Also, it's just my theory, but I think the A25/A28 will hold their retail value better because of the exclusive hydraulic swim platform that is just now available on the R30 but nothing smaller in the R-series.

Agreed. If that's is a grandpa boat then call me Pappy! Still the sexiest looking boat on the water.

Tuscany you are always spot on with market trends and future spending predictions from the younger buying public and you make a very valid point. Couple that with production costs and what Nick has described and it's easy to see why they have been discontinued.

But it still moves a little bit when I see one.

JMHO. These four letters tend to get me in trouble.🤪

Grandpa was a metaphor, and not meant to insult. If someone took that the wrong way, my apologies. Look at it this way, grandpa as in your “This Is Not Your Grandfathers Oldsmobile”, if anyone remembers that GM sales campaign from the 90’s.

Oh god, here I go...
The A series is definitely your grandfathers Oldsmobile.
The complicated hull design, and the excessive labor going into building it makes it obsolete. Look at it as obsolete in the way that a Chris Craft is obsolete. Nice classic lines, unmistakable from a distance, but priced out of market because of the build complications and older target buyers, and definitely not a mainstream selling design anymore. How many classic Chris Crafts are sold today? If there aren’t semi loads of them leaving the factory every single day, well, thats how companies shutter up. I’m still surprised Cobalt designed and then actually built the A36.

Trends change, markets change. Buyers change.
It’s the job of any company director or CEO to look into their crystal ball and chart the course of their company for the next decade, and do all of that correctly, and do that “today”.

Boat manufacturers are starting to feel a new issue, the squeeze from the current administrations tariff policies that now require a leaner, meaner, more focused operation.
https://wtop.com/national/2018/08/ameri ... p-tariffs/
Overseas sales are now close to impossible.
We’ve got to think more changes will be coming over the next year. I still think the A40 and the A36 days are numbered.

Old money spenders are no longer a player because are being taken over by young money that spends freely.. Lots and lots of young tech money, and they won’t be buying A series Cobalts.
Personally, I see Malibu and other sport boats as the hot boat for young singles/couples choice. Formula and others like it positioned to attract the 40-50 year old buyer.

Same problem here Gdane. They have to expand their network, but I think they’re business model encompasses coastal regions, and not inland water. That’s where the fast cash resides.
Then call me Gramps! I absolutely love the A series. Def makes it move.

But Tusc you're spot on with a lot of your comments. Being 40 with a young family it's only a matter of time before I'm in a 25LSV because of the kids and lake I'm on. I've always had a thing for Cobalt and Bu's... and Formula. The Cobalt acquisition has my curiosity piqued what will come out of which factory in the future. I'm undoubtedly going to love whatever Cobult tech-laden hybrid lovechild that they come up with. I'm already in love with this thing:

I mean how cool is that rig?

The real question will be can/if/will I be able to keep my baby...
