New member - 2001 Cobalt 226
Hi, I just bought this 226 a month ago. Found this forum while looking for some info.
She is powered by a VP 5.7 GXI with Duoprop.
Great boat.
Only thing that bothers me is I can't seem to go fast.
She pulls great and I'm seeing 5000 rpm but she won't run over 43 mph (GPS).
Greetings from Europe.

Greetings!!
Great looking boat you have purchased.
I am not surprised that it isnt the fastest boat as Cobalts are not that type of craft, but I would expect a little more RPM from a 5.7gxi. Check to see what prop is on there and I am sure we can figure out from there. I wouldn't get your hopes up for more than 50 GPS MPH though

Yea that rpm and speed doesn't match up at all. Are you trimming the drive unit at all? Max rpm is 5200 I believe with a gxi. It should pull m8d to high 50mph. Something is a muck. But hey welcome!
I just saw a 226 with a 496ho for 31k for sale

Re: New member - 2001 Cobalt 226
My tach only runs up to 5000 rpm.And it is the 5.7 gxi TBI with 315hp so I've read WOT at 4600-5000.
The holeshot is is very good, on plane in only a few seconds. Engine sounds great, it climbs to 5000 in no time. No hesitation whatsoever.
I'll try to take a look at the props. They are SS props but no idea what size (F4-F5-F6?). Is it stamped somewhere on it ?
It's in the water so I'll try to snap a pic from the props.
The boat does have antifouling so that could eat some mph.
Tried trimming up but doesn't seem to make much of a difference for speed.
My previous boat was a glastron hammond v-1850 with a 4.3 mercruiser.
The holeshot wasn't as good as the cobalt (and it had a HighFive prop on it) but it could manage 52 mph on GPS easily.
I know it was smaller and lighter but it only had about 175 hp (205 crankshaft) with a single prop.
Boats here in Europe are not cheap. For example, a 2013 Cobalt 276 sells easily for 115000 dollar. Import duties are very high.
I really had to search for an affordable Cobalt. And I'm very happy with it.
Surely I'm no speed junkie, 43 is more than enough for me and my wife, but just trying to find out if there is something wrong..

Hello fellow 226 owner. I experienced the same, but with no bottom paint. Have the same boat, motor as you. My props are F6’s, they are stamped On the props. The bottom paint will affect the top end. I see at wide open after having the hull waxed (no bottom paint). 55-56, at 5200 to 5300 rpm…
Tune up will help but the bottom paint is a drag to some extent. Before my mini tuned up and waxing, it was sub 50 at WOT.

Take a picture of your engine too please. What year is your 226? That is one of the fastest hulls Cobalt made so it should turn mud 50s. Maybe your reading kph? Take a picture of your guages.

Nice boat you've got there. Looks new!
Mine's also a 2001.
Unfortunately mine didn't have the bimini with it so I'm still searching for one.
Our season here is almost over so a tune up, cleaning and waxing will be done this winter.
Let's hope it helps.

Currently no picture of gauges but it is MPH. Checked with gps on my phone. (43 kph is only 27 mph, that would be very slow
Will snap a pic from the gauges and props when I'm at the marina.

Re: New member - 2001 Cobalt 226
I think I found why I'm missing speed.
It seems I've got F3 props on it.
Should I switch to F5 or F6 to get some more speed ?
Anybody knows how the boat was propped from the factory ?
