You can't always get what you want - Or can you?

Post by CD262 »

We bought our '11 262 in January this year, and as with buying any used boat, you often have to sacrifice a few things here and there, or resign yourself to searching forever for the perfect boat. When we found ours, there were a few things that were "need to have" like the VP 8.1, 140 hours, hull and interior condition, hull color, etc. There were a few "Nice to have" things that we didn't get, but they weren't deal breakers. The Nice to haves, I am now working on. I've added Seadek and a flagpole, and just ordered the docking lights as I knew all of that could be added fairly easily.

The one thing that I don't know about and would love to hear from someone that might have looked into it (or knew someone that may have) is regarding the woodgrain dash option. Why this isn't standard I don't know, but the guy who bought this boat obviously didn't opt for it. Since this is an 11 I know I am out of the 7 year window, but I know the 12s and 13s have the same dash set up and I believe share the same architecture with the 242s. Has anyone done this after the fact? Would need the dash and the arch on the glove box door, which seems to be a piece just attached to the door.

Anyway, this is a deal that has been on my mind so I figured I'd ask the experts. :)

Ok you might be able to get a company to make them for you. Might be one a grand or more is my guess to do it. I tried using a newer hin to order stuff. Nope they won't do it. But hey good luck.

I wonder how they are made. Perhaps you (or someone you hire) could make a mold of your original one (use plastic wrap to keep the original clean), make a fiberglass replacement from the mold, clean up the fiberglass and cover the fiberglass in your veneer of choice, and polyurethane the end product?
Or, if it’s flat rather than curved, it’s way easier to just cut out of either a backing board or your favorite pretty wood once you trace the old one, then veneer and poly.

If it's anything like mine ... It was just a thin wood veneer over a metal backing plate.

I actually looked at these guys (https://newwiremarine.com/custom-marine-switch-panels/) before deciding to make a new dash myself.

They have some nice wood grain options, and were reasonable priced.
