Truck question

Post by sailor55330 »

I'm not sure where to put this but thought I'd stick it here---mods, feel free to move.

My question is not about the boat, but about my tow vehicle. 2008 Sequoia and I have developed a high pitched whine in the rear end that occurs from 50-60mph only. It's not present above or below that speed and goes away if you take your foot off the accelerator and coast. I've done all of my own differential services and the interval has never been more than 30k and I use Redline full synthetic gear oil. I've looked on line and so far no luck with finding much....there are some documented cases of wheel bearings, but having had bad wheel bearings on vehicles before, this isn't a wheel bearing...as I said, it's a high pitched whine that is very predictable and specific. I'm thinking it's an issue with the ring & pinion, but that's only a guess. I did a tranny service at 75k (book calls for 100k) so I don't think it's a transmission issue.

I know there are some auto gurus here (or at least folks way smarter than me). Anyone care to take a guess or through out a starting place? With the truck paid for and only 84,000 miles, I'm not ready to trade to a new one. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Is your rear a limited slip differential? Gear whine under load - the first thing to check is the fluid level. The next would be pinion lash. It might be out of spec. If you have an LSD I'd go back to Oem fluid with the proper additives for your application.

It is LSD. I can check the fluid level once it warms up... As for OEM fluid, that is an option, but it does not call for any modifer. I verified this with 2 separate dealerships. My gut is something in the pinion--I didn't know it was called pinion lash.

Are you running 75w-140 or 75w-90 in the rear differential? I see that Toyota specs a 5k mile change for heavy use. Seems a bit unusual.

Edit - found a lot of people wondering what to do for the rear LSD on that car: https://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/ ... ge=3&amp=1

Yea the bad is you can't just replace your pinion. It gets a gear pattern set into the ring gear. Your going to be replacing both of them. Or just live with it. Sorry I'm not interested in buying your truck. Let's get back to talking about your boat. Lol

As BB stated the ring and pinion are a matched set at birth and as the gear pattern runs off the ring gear they whine.
Caused by loss of crush sleeve tension that allows the pinion to now move slightly under load.

A side effect of towing max gvw with good power but weaker drivetrains.

Shall i post a pic of a ugly duramax that laughs at towing🤣🤣

That actually makes sense as it seems to have gotten louder since we got the boat.... So, is this something worth fixing or is it something that signals "new tow vehicle"?

Really hoping for the first option

You can get it fixed if you know a good drive train tech. But again the truck maybe a bit light for what your pulling and may Happen again. Plus if you're looking to go a bigger boat soon now might be a good time for a upgrade.

Thanks BBP....funny how I'm towing about 2/3 the rating yet it seems to be causing issues. As for a driveline tech, I have zero connections in the automotive field.

Hypothetically, I would need another SUV and none of them have a higher rating than what I have now but the costs are surely higher. This could potentially suck. I only drive the truck about 5k annually.

Why an SUV? Why not a 3/4 ton crew cab pickup?

To add to my post....

We went from an Expedition and then to a Honda Pilot when we were not towing. When I bought the Cobalt back and it looked like we would be towing more, I traded in the Pilot for a low-mileage 2006 F250 Lariat Crew Cab with the 6.0 diesel. I was concerned about the engine and made a deal for the extended service plan that covered ALL engine related issues. It's been a great truck and I have no plans to get rid of it and it tows our 6000# like its not there.

We usually have 2 dogs with us and soon to be 3. Tough to fit in the cab. If the dogs aren’t with us the. We often hVe multiple adults. I have thought about a 3/4 ton but would wouldn’t think about one without a diesel. The cold up here isn’t the best for diesels. It was 30 below last week

SUVs just make more sense. Besides not sure if I’d like a truck full time

It could very well be the pinion bearing. I've had one fail, made the same noise at higher speed.

Ford Expedition. Just make sure to get one /w the towing package and the 3.73 rear end. 9,300lbs towing, and the 3.5 EcoBoost would pull your house down the street with its 470ft/lbs of torque.
