Re: Buying a new Cobalt boat sticky thread

Post by tsouthard91 »

Im looking at a 220s, but the dealer only has them with the 280 V6. That just isn't enough for me.

Does anyone on the forum have a newer style 220/220s with the 300hp or 350hp option?

Would love to know the performance details.

I have driven a 220S with the Volvo 300hp option and I thought it had more than enough power. It did 50mph with ease. I noticed you are in the Arkansas area. State Park Marina on Table Rock(the harbor owns this marina as well) rents the 220S and you can take one out on a nice 4-8hr test drive if you would like. That is what I did and after that I was sold on a Cobalt. I ended up going a little larger but it was nice to get a nice extended test drive with no pushy salesman there.

Aj or Vans will reply to this. They both have What your looking for.
TSouthard you should start a new thread as for what your looking for. Then the admins will move this to that thread.

Cobalt 220s Performance

Post by tsouthard91 »

Guys,

Went to the boat show yesterday and they had some killer deals on '18 models.

Here are the details. 220s, 280hp V6, Tower, Sport style seating, etc.

My problem is, I don't think the 280 is enough. Heavily considering a 220s but am curious about the performance of the boat with 300hp or even 350hp.
Anyone have stats they can share with either setup?

My current setup is great with power and top end. I know I will have buyers remorse in 2 months if I settled for the 280.

Thanks in advance

Going from the 6.2 to anything less then a 350 I think you will be highly disappointed. I know they will say the engines are so much better but don't kid yourself. You have 320hp don't go down more than the 300. I think you would be ok with that one. It would be nice to drive the new 220 compared to ours. I was working on a flip 220 with a 270 5.0L v8 but no way would I try to flip a V6. Get a hold of me before you trade in your boat though. Thanks and good luck.

Ive got an old like new 7.4L Bravo 330hp. and I can get about 57mph out of it. I got it at midway thru the season last yr and it has a banged up prop. Anyway the prop is getting reworked and I still crave more speed. I cant imagine why they dont put the bigger motors in the 220 anymore. I would want the 454 too, could you maybe order it like you want?

Enough money on the table and Cobalt will put whatever you want in a new one. Do I smell a 525 powered 220? ;)

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I agree with what y’all are saying. My 220 currently, will hit 57, 2 people, 2 big dogs and 1/2 fuel. The new 220 is lighter, but I don’t think I’ll be happy with just the 300.

If money grew on trees, I’d take an R3 with the 600hp Merc

We had a 300 HP 350 Mag in our 21 foot boat with a Bravo 1 and it had excellent performance. Mid 50's boat.

My 350 mag alpha 1 in my crownline 202 was a rocket and stump puller. The 350mag b3 in my Cobalt 200 was a slug and was not even close to what my crownline had. Every engine is diff. And each hull is diff.

I was in the same boat (no pun intended) when trying to figure out the best setup. The 280 V-6 and 300 V-8 are very comparable in performance top end, but the outa hole isn't the same. My dealer flat out told me the 350 isn't worth the extra $7,000 - 8,000 for 1-3 mph's top end. I'll have to search but there is a torque curve graph floating around and the 300 & 350 are the same from idle -> 5,200 rpm.

I ended up with the 300 and its more than enough, really quick on plane and 50 - 52 gps top end. With the new upgrades VP has made this motor will run right there with the 7.4 310hp my family had in there 226, well, except for top end due to the 226 being a really fast hull.

Good luck! :)
