Torque Rating
I’ve been looking for the torque ratings for the new Volvo Penta outdrives. All I can find is the horsepower numbers, I’m curious to know the ft-lb of torque on the engines that have the same displacement.
I just want to know what you gain for $8000 going from the 6.2 380 to the 6.2 430 in a R5.
Does anyone know?

Re: Torque Rating
I have been through several threads and have yet to find a spec sheet with torque numbers.
I buy trucks with Cummins engines in them. For example I can choose a X15 rated at 605 hp and 1850 ft-lb or the same block rated at 565 hp and 2050 ft-lb torque. The hp doesn’t always relate to the torque setting.
I’m just looking for the actual torque numbers for the same block with different hp settings.

Re: Torque Rating
Tye do sometimes publish torque numbers (and curves), but you generally have to pick an engine and click on the "Product Leaflet" page on the engine-specific website page under the "Specifications" tab to see them. For example, the leaflet links for the 5.3L 300hp engine are at: https://www.volvopenta.com/marineleisur ... ation.html
Volvo has a habit of using the same block with different peak HP numbers, but very similar torque at the same RPM. I have a V8-225 (5.7L) that has the same torque from 0-4600 rpm as the V8-300, for example - just doesn't have the higher rpm needed to generate the same peak horsepower.

Re: Torque Rating
Thanks for the info. Found the torque graph for the 5.3, but I couldn’t find it for the 6.2. It must be top secret, what I saw on the 5.3 I would guess there’s that much difference on the 6.2 . Probably not $8000 worth in the price of the boat.

Re: Torque Rating
I guess I’ll take my chance with the 380. Someone will probably come out with a tuner for less than 8 grand.

Re: Torque Rating
We are all waiting for that. If it was merc that would have already happened. Not sure why the guys are so far behind getting into Volvo ecu's. I would love to get mine tweaked.Jeeper wrote: Wed Jan 30, 2019 8:40 pm I guess I’ll take my chance with the 380. Someone will probably come out with a tuner for less than 8 grand.

Re: Torque Rating
Just based on volume it's much more profitable to support Mercruiser aftermarket than Volvo.

Re: Torque Rating
When I bought my R5 with my wish list of thing I thought I needed. Ha, When I saw bottom line I said may have to rethink this. Dealer came out with his book on engine speed and said Difference between 380 and 350 was 2 miles per hour according to Cobalt. Hmm I said. Instead of going 54 could I possibly be happy going 52. How often do you really run wide open like that?? I saved the Money. Just saying

Re: Torque Rating
And the torque and HP numbers for the same block are usually the same up until somewhere north of 4000 rpm, so your hole shot and watersports towing capability will be improved more with a duo prop outdrive than with a higher peak HP number.

Re: Torque Rating
350 and 380 are different blocks and we don’t have a torque curve chart for the 380. But you are right with the 300/350 comparison. Torque and HP follow the same curves until about 4,600 rpm, then the HP on the 300 flattens while the 350 adds the extra HP. With torque, after 4,600, the 300 drops off faster than the 350. I’m betting the 380 has another 30 or 40 lb. ft. than the 350 and the extra 30HP along with a different prop adds a few mph. It wasn’t worth an extra $6,000 to me.jhnmdahl wrote: Thu Apr 04, 2019 12:40 pm And the torque and HP numbers for the same block are usually the same up until somewhere north of 4000 rpm, so your hole shot and watersports towing capability will be improved more with a duo prop outdrive than with a higher peak HP number.

Re: Torque Rating
Update: I have had some email exchanges in the past week with Volvo Penta customer service. I was told (after the woman I spoke to on the phone consulted with the "engine" department) that there are no torque/HP curves for the 380/430 motors. Obviously that can't be true, but there must be some reason why Volvo Penta doesn't want to share the information. I was referred back to Cobalt boats for more information. That doesn't help, because Cobalt said they didn't have that information either.
Without additional information on the torque rating for the 380 (as compared to the 350) I ordered a 350 for my R3.
