Average age of a new boat buyer.

Post by MnLakeBum »

I thought this was an interesting graph. I was right at the average when I bought the R5 a year ago.

First new boat with a motor was my Cobalt 210 - I was 43. Might as well start on the right foot :)

Well i’m 35 will probably be 36 (bday is in early March) by the time I close on my new R7. So that will put me ahead of the average as well!

Interesting! I wonder how many they surveyed and whether they were inland or coastal? Surely it would make a difference?

Hmm.. that has me thinking on my boat history...

I bought my first boat at 22. A 16' aluminum fishing boat with a center console and outboard. Second boat at 26. A 1965 Eivnrude Playmate with a 14' fiberglass tri-hull and a2-stroke 90hp inboard. I loved that boat and had it a long time! That motor would make that little thing fly but it rode like a beet wagon. It looked just like this:

Then at 40 I bought a 19' FourWinns bowrider with a 5.7. And at 54 my first Cobalt 240 and 56 my second one, my current ride.

So I guess I don't fit in the averages either...

I was 35 when I purchased my first brand new boat. 2000 Stingray 19 footer. Had it until recently, traded it in on the new 220. I have yet to drive the new Cobalt but I go up to the dealer to visit her now and again, longing for warmer months ahead....

I just turned 34 when I purchased our 2018 cs22. Seems like our results are skewed- perhaps because we are more "enthiusiasts" opposed to just the average buyer. Either way, neat graph!

You guys are making me feel like an Old Man. First boat - 28 years old. Second boat - 58 yrs. A pretty good gap for 30 years. Hint- the first one didn't last that long!!

First boat at 26, second boat at 36. Look out 46! I'll stick to the 10 year replacement program!

I was more of a motorcycle guy.
Boating was the last thing I ever thought I would get involved in living in an area with such a short season.
My wife sprang the idea, by chance I found our first boat the next day and bought it. It weirdly fell together. I think I was 45.
57 when I ordered the R7.

Probably the last boat we’ll own...until the next one. 😂

Never bought a "new" boat but I was 48.3 when I bought a "new to me" boat in September, not far off average.

I’m right on schedule for my first new boat. My R5 Surf was sprayed on January 15. I don’t know how long it takes to build one, but I hope to see it soon.
