Re: Truck question

Post by sailor55330 »

Well, Truck went into the shop today. I made some calls and as it turns out, I got a really good recommendation on a shop that specializes in drivetrains and such (not the one I was originally looking at). It came recommended by 2 people that I know are huge gearheads and I trust their judgement. To top it off, I called the shop and after talking to them, discovered I know one of the guys running the place (he used to work at a friends family body shop so I've done business with him previously)--talk about a small world. At least I feel now as I know I'll get the straight story and not be told I'm low on blinker fluid or be given a band-aid. They've been in business for 31 years, so they are doing something right.

You know, it's an interesting discussion around upgrading trailer brakes vs tow vehicle. 100% agree that good trailer brakes are essential, whether they are electric, EOH, or surge. I have surge and they work surprisingly well with discs on all 4 wheels BUT good brakes can't compensate for low payload or the suspension as others have said. That's my biggest complaint with my current vehicle---it does move around some on rough roads, which is basically all Minnesota has....

If size isn’t an issue, a new or late model HD truck may be something to consider. Four doors, interior appointments that rival any luxury car, and a very decent ride.

That’s all I personally drive, and have most of my life.
Then, you have it all.

I completely agree. All I need is someone to show me how to put 1 Weimeraner and 2 Labs in the cab in crates along with valuables (read long gun) and keep all the other provisions dry in the bed without a tonneau cover (limits the hauling benefit of an open truck) and then you might convince me. When we travel now, the Sequoia is full with 2 dogs and the provisions

Do 3/4 ton's fit in standard 2 car garage's?

Lucky for you we have moved past the sad days of huge one piece fiberglass bed covers. My truck came with the Ford OEM TriFold cover - which is really just a BakFlip MX4 with a Ford sticker on it. https://bakindustries.com/bakflip-mx4 It flips back on top of itself and when folded against the cab lets you use almost all the space in the bed.

If I didn't already have the MX4 I would have looked hard at the https://www.peragon.com/ Instead of folding up against the cab it folds down into the bed. Don't tell Katie but I am actually hoping my MX4 somehow falls apart so I can switch to this.

Regardless of what you chose if you combine a modern folding bed cover with a locking tailgate your stuff remain safe and somewhat dry in the back of the bed.

As far as interior space, my F150 Crew has crazy amounts of room in the back. The floor is totally flat and the seats fold up against the back wall. I haven't tried but I dont think fitting two dog crates would be a problem at all.

The garage thing sucks, but you need something to tow the R3 so it is what it is. The new 2020 super duty looks awesome, and I am really interested to see what kind of numbers the 7.3L engine puts out. That said I wouldn't buy a first generation Ford anything. Just me.

My wife has always driven a large SUV. This time around, she wants to downsize to something like an XT5.
Reason being that if we need to travel or take a whole lot with us, we are just as comfortable in our HD truck.
Actually, I would much rather drive a truck.

As Jeff pointed out, with today’s locking tailgate and hard cover, everything is completely secure. With the various bed covers I’ve had in the past, none of them have ever leaked a drop.
Love that Peragon fold up Jeff.

The new 7.3L gas is rumored to be over 500lbs of torque. It’s never the first year when Ford gas engines are problematic. Those issues usually show up when warranty expires, like the piston slap of the old Tritons. The new diesel should be over 1,000 lbs.

It really is an awesome design. My only gripe about the BakFlip is how it folds up against the back window, course most of the time I only have two of the 3 panels folded so its not an issue. But still that Peragon is just cool, as an added bonus it pulls totally out of the truck so you can use the whole bed with no issues.

My only concern with it is how would it fold down into the bed if we had a weekend of lake junk back there. Flipping up the back panel of the MX4 just to grab something out of the bed seems easier.

The reviews I have seen on the 7.3 make it look like a great option for people like me who tow enough to need a 3/4 Ton platform but not enough to need a 1000ft/lb diesel engine. In some ways it would seem like a step backwards, I mean a big displacement Push Rod Port Injected V8 is so 1970's, but can't argue /w the reliability I guess. How long until it shows up in a marine platform?

Back to the original point here - Spending Sailor's Money. Go checkout a 2019 F150 /w Max Tow. Will drag around the R3 without much fuss at all.

Come on Matt I respect you and your vast knowledge, a true gentleman and a scholar. I know you are a GM guy, but you HAVE to admit that truck is ugly. Right? Right?!?! I mean you are just messing /w us?

Just tell me you don't actually like the looks of that thing. It looks like the damn family truckster. Where to start? The stupid stacked thin headlights? The awkwardly placed rear view mirrors? At least they finally realized round wheels look best in round wheel wells.

Compare that uhh well Truck the new F250/350 and there is no possible way a sane person can say the Chevy product looks better. It's just impossible.

I had a 2012 Yukon Denali until I sold it when my company provided me with a Chevy Traverse...major step back. But free is free, and as I now think about getting a Cobalt, the boat will mostly live on the dock at home but I might want to trailer it up north to Boyne City etc. I hope the R7 is ok to trailer but I’ll probably need a beast for towing. I have a deposit down on the Rivian SUV but I’ll probably cancel it as I’m sure it’ll struggle to handle an R7. And then my ADD brain says the R5 might be better if we want to tow it to vacation places. Did I mention my wife wants to kill me? Recovering from surgery and all I do all day is research boats, the accessories I want on it, and what to get for towing.
