Talk me in to or out of a 293/303

Post by glenncal1 »

Wife and I are selling our 38' Sea Ray aft cabin and when sold will be looking to move in to a smaller day style boat. Still want to have a cabin with mobile AC (so a genny required) and the ability to overnite in a pinch. Will be located in Florida. Liking the looks and size of the 293/303 series (303 may be out of budget). Big block single enough motor for this boat or should I stick with twins. Thanks for your help and opinions.

I would not buy a boat that size without twins. Not only will it feel underpowered, but docking a boat that big with a single screw would suck.

So glad you found us gc1.
Definitely twins in that size mostly for maneuverability.

And welcome aboard mate!

The 293 is an excellent choice and checks all the boxes that you mentioned. Owned one for 7 years and called it the SUV of boats. Can carry 8-10 comfortably and overnight a couple in a pinch ( I never did though). A single big block is doable, but I'd definitely go with twins for the sake of maneuverability and still has plenty of room for service.

Has anyone driven or ridden in one with a single 330hp big block? There are a few for sale with that motor. Is it enough to move the boat?

Probably shouldn't comment, but that's never stopped me before. Most people here wouldn't even order a 23'10" R3 without the 350 hp.
That's a lot more boat and weight for 330 hp.

I agree with Krob1114. I think it will feel a little sluggish with only 330.

We have a 293 and couldn't be happier. We have the twin 5.0s with bravo 3s and man this thing can scoot. Gets on plane faster than you'd think. Wish I could answer regarding the single engine but good luck. We've got almost 1000 hours on both engines and generator with no signs of slowing down
