Anyone tried to replace their fuel pump?

This forum like the last with my Interceptor is packed full of priceless info and help. Thanks to all.

Now every time I read a new troubleshooting post it’s like Googling a medical question…. Answer is always, “your dying.”

Ordering plugs/wires, disturber cap/rotor for a tune up to address some lugging at power up. Told the service rep (and read on this forum) that I hear whinny noise past 3000 rpm and it might be the fuel pump. He agreed that might be it, and a post or two has mentioned the same.

Here in Nashville service is backed up to August. I don’t like messing with vapors. Has anyone tackled the fuel pump replacement? The high and low pressure pump are on the same mount so it’s one part number, and the fuel pump is on the left from of the motor so access isn’t bad.

Hard to do? Total mess, do you need to prime the pumps at install, or just wait and let the service department handle it?

I changed mine on my 2001 206 5.7L Gsi engine. Took about a half hour. No muss, no fuss. The pumps came as a package, mounted on the the assembly that includes the fuel filter. Remove 4 bolts, I think, the fuel lines, and disconnect a molex connector. Installation is the reverse of removal. Not hard at all. Did the normal pre-start priming with the ignition key, and she started right up. There is a fellow in the web that will sell a rebuilt assembly for a lot less that a new one. The new V-P assembly is expensive, especially for a known problem.

Thanks and great to know. Is there pressure in the system when disconnecting the fuel lines? Just to be prepared?

Also, a new fuel pump is about $421 from Modern Marine local. Hope I can find your guy. Any chance you remember where he is out of or a web site. I’m going to fire up the Ole Google magic box in just a bit.

That's the guy. Thanks BBP. My engine had 2 fuel pumps, and was around $800 from Leaders Marine. It had a low pressure (lift) pump, and a high pressure pump to feed the injectors. I was considering sending my pump assembly to Mancave for rebuilding before I sold the boat. I don't recall any type of pressure on the fuel lines when I disconnected them, but you might wrap a towel around them.
