Affordable OBD scanner. Who has one?

Post by ourlee »

I’m looking for an affordable code reader. I get random warning beeps but my gauges read all is well. I’d like to decipher what is going on in real time, not at my mechanics convenience. I have an 07 250 w a 375 merc.
Thanks. Rick

Define affordable. You really don't have many choices. I own the Rinda scanner.

This likely the cheapest

I own this

Give them a call before you buy to make sure you get the correct adapter. Good customer service.

Thank you. I’ll let my mechanic sort it out and order it.

Where do you plug it in?
I have the iCarsoft for Mercedes and it saves me from rip-offs. Would like same on boat.

There is a 10 pin purple connector on the top of your engine. It should already have a termination plug in it. You remove the termination plug to plug in the scanner. You have to buy a couple adapters with the scanner. One is a CAN bus adapter which has a 6 pin connector and then another adapter that converts the 6 pin to a 10 pin on your engine.

Don't have my boat here but I can take a picture when I am there in 2 weeks.

I use the scanner for my Mercury outboard too. I drained the oil at the end of a season and it had some water in the crankcase. When I scanned the motor, like I always do at the end of the season, it showed I had a low temp error. That pointed me to the thermostat that was stuck open. No more water after that.

On my outboard, I also keep track of the hours with the scanner since there is no other way. It keeps track of total hours and hours for every 1000 RPM range.

Bruce ty so much. My mechanic is scanning the engine Monday with his (gasp) $6500 tool. I’ll watch what he does and send him a link to the t pro.

Just to clarify what i am telling Krob1114. That applies to his engine. If you have a Volvo Penta or an older MC engine, it will be a different type of connector. Rhinda will let you know what you need.
