Heads Up on Heritage Trziler Fulton F2 Winch Combo.

Post by XLI »

Looking to upgrade to a 2 speed winch since we trailer exclusively and I am both trailer wrangler and boat pilot. Purchased the F2 winch with its easy mounting system only to find my Heritage trailer's 3 bolt system inexplicably uses a top center bolt that is mounted in an entirely enclosed location with the threads protruding up from the mounting plate. Unfortunately with its thick aluminum cast body there is not enough bolt sticking out to attach the lock washer and nut. Also my two bottom holes were about 1/5th of a screw too wide to attach there as well. So while the pattern looked good it doesn't work.

Not a good morning.

I'm not much of a machinist. My assumption is the aluminum winch relies more on its mass and cast structure for strength so I have been hesitant to drill into the winch body. Drilling out one of the bottom holes of the trailer mounting plate is doable (if I buy a half inch drill) but unfortunately the top center stud mounted on the trailer is too short. I suppose I could try and reduce the thickness on the winch casting at that location, but again I worry about cracking the winch or at least compromising it's strength. Do you have the aluminum F2 and have you drilled it with no issues?

Yea I switched to mine and had to adjust it. I forgot what I for with the 1 stud up frt. But I think it was long enough. AJ had the same issue so he switched to a diff wench. See if you can find his post to see what brand he bought. It's not as Purdy as mine but it does the same job and he loves it. Or send him a PM or he may read this and reply.

Here is the setup:

The pictures show the stud setup and one picture shows the welded tube containing the stud. One picture indicates the holes that are just too narrow.
I have decided to return the winch and look for a more traditional winch. I'm gonna eat at least $30 or more on shipping and re-stocking.

I am replacing g a Dutton Lainson winch and they make a 2 speed that appears to be a high quality product. I just didn't like the fact you detach and move the handle to change gearing. Seems like tempting fate on a boat ramp. That is probably what I will go with now though.

I never take mine off the high gear anyways. You only winch up a ft anyways.
Yes that's The other brand to buy. Just leave the handle in The truck. Or buy a spare. People like to steal them also. Fyi
