Yes - that one will be installed on the boat next season. I’m going to rebuild this one over the winter so I have a spare. Either that or a expensive anchor

It will be expensive. It's cool to tear it down but really if your new one exploded and it's in better shape than this I would just stick the extra money into that one. Just me.

Is it because all these parts are shot? Do you think it’s not worth it?

Yes it's a total repair. I would just save the money and use it somewhere else on the boat. And now you know how to get it apart so if the other one happens to fail you can tear into this one. To sticks hundreds into this one for the who knows when to me isn't worth it. Just my 2 cents.

Wow... i dont think ive ever seen gears smooth out like that before! usually the teeth chip off because they are hardened steel. Like BBP is saying, if you already have a full replacement outdrive for it its not really worth spending time and money on rebuilding this old one. But maybe the boat is wrapped and this is all you have right now to work with lol. I would strip it down, clean it up (coat with anti-corrosion spray or oil), and stuff the good parts in a bin. Then down the line if you happen to break something you will have parts to replace the good drive with.

hows the motor? if the outdrive was never serviced then im assuming the motor wasn't either. manifolds ever replaced? I would be more worried about the health of the motor then the outdrive. the 21BR is one of my favorites and will enjoy seeing the progress on this project!

Thanks for the post. The motor is in great shape, though nothing has been replaced since I have owned it. The boat doesn’t get many hours, I’ll get the number once it’s opened for the season. Thanks for the post.

Just the tools to break down this unit will prolly cost $1k. The spanner wrench goes for over $100. Unreal.

So depressing.

I guess I’ll spend this weekend putting it back together.

Well - my thought now to send it along to the place where I got the new/used unit from and get the $300 core back. Then use that money towards these manifolds that apparently need replacing on cookies magnificent motor

You go! I have a '91 263 and the looks you get from captaining a vintage Cobalt...priceless.

Thank you for saving her. Looking forward to the progress.

As a kid growing up in Chautauqua NY there was a boat at the main dock at chq institution with the name the Cookie Monster? Back in the 80s we loved the name of the boat. I actually think it might have belonged to our camp counselor. Any chance this boat came from Chautauqua?

Yeah, don’t spend any money rebuilding an OMC drive, you’ll never get that money back, and it won’t be cheap. Turn it in for the core and be done with it. If you want to keep the boat long term start researching an Alpha 1 swap when the ‘new’ drive fails.
