Flag Mount Suggestions
Flag Mount Suggestions
I am a new Cobalt owner (2018 CS23), and this long winter is killing me! Bought my boat in November, and can't wait to get it on the water in the spring. I've been wanting a flag and got one for Christmas. Would love to know if anyone has mounted a flag on their boat...location and such. Looks like read port side, just in front of the cleat would be the spot, but I'm a bit concerned of how this would affect the mooring cover that we have. The thought of drilling into my hull is kinda freaking me out. Afraid to try it myself! Would love some advice...with pics!

.
Just love that color Rc3.
Drilling is not difficult. Get some masking tape...tape the area... and then mark where the holes are going. Make a small pilot hole say with a 1/8" drill. Then run the bigger drill backwards first so it will not "grab" the gelcoat to chip it. Once the hole gets started, run the drill forward to complete the penetration. Do the same with a hole saw for the flag pole opening.

Re: Flag Mount Suggestions
Thank you for the tip, AsLan! I am now torn as to whether I should return this product in lieu of the flat mounting Tag Tech system. I like the flag attachments of this pole, but I am concerned a bit about the mounting bracket not being flush with the hull (while the flag pole is out). Hope this makes sense, and thank you all in advance!

Re: Flag Mount Suggestions
It looks like the benefit of the one you have is you wouldn't have to drill a "big" hole, just three small screw holes.

Re: Flag Mount Suggestions
+2 for Tig Technologies. Cobalt installed their flagpoles for many years before Cobalt moved to a foreign supplier. The TT flagpole is made in the United States, as all American flags should be. It was the first modification I did to my CS3, and it's not too difficult after you get over the scare of drilling a hole into your beautiful gelcoat. As noted above, start drilling the hole with the drill in reverse to avoid chipping, and use masking tape as well. Also, don't drill straight down; rather try to match the angle of the hole to the angle of the receiver to ensure a flush mount to the gunwale.

Re: Flag Mount Suggestions
I didn't want to drill holes, so I bought these mounts that fit over a tube and did a small flag on each side of the rear deck. This picture was of it right after I pulled her out of my storage garage and had installed the sea deck.

Beautiful boat, VR! Yeah, that is a nice setup. I wish I had somewhere to mount a flag like you've got there. I don't have those tubes on the rear of my CS. I love the look of the TigTech, but just don't want to (nor do I have the tools to) drill that big center hole! Guess I'm gonna stick to my mount with the three small holes. Wish me luck! Spring can't get here quick enough.

Re: Flag Mount Suggestions
Dooooooon't! You'll regret not installing the TT pole, and it will grate on you every time you look at or step in your boat. When the flag is not raised, which is most of the time, the TT receiver gives you a factory appearance and sits flush on the gunwale. Also, it's made of high quality marine grade stainless steel, so it will last forever. Are you sure what you are installing has the same quality materials?russc3 wrote: Sun Jan 17, 2021 2:19 pm I love the look of the TigTech, but just don't want to (nor do I have the tools to) drill that big center hole! If you have the tools to drill "three small holes" then you have the tools to "drill that big center" hole! Either way, you're doing the exact same thing--measuring and then drilling 3 holes in your pristine gelcoat, but the 3rd hole for the TT is larger. It will cost you less than $20 to buy a quality hole saw for your drill. The folks at TT will tell you exactly what size hole to drill, and the size and type of SS hardware you need to get. It is an easy DIY project, or probably not to expensive to pay a pro to install it.

Dammit, JMA! Now you got me thinking again...and that's NEVER a good thing! So, you mounted yours with no issues? Do you have to get up inside the boat to do any mounting? Or is all drilling and such done from the exterior? If so, how'd you get to that spot?

Re: Flag Mount Suggestions
I'm just seeing this but also highly recommend the Tig Tech. I added it to my CS22 and recommend it all the time.
