Engine hatch puncture

Stepping onto the boat this weekend, the engine hatch moved more than normal.

When I lifted to hatch to inspect .... I found this

All that supports the hatch is a rubber "cap" on top of a bolt ...
Looks like the bolt pushed through the cap

Going to fill the hole and secure a piece of aluminum or steel over the hole that will better spread the load to prevent further damage ... unless someone suggest a better idea.

Those bumpers are not a good design, but none of mine punched thru. You have to be sure they are adjusted correctly.

That POS is defective now Eric. I guess I'd be willing to take it off of your hands at a discount to spare you the mental anguish and hardship, and then you can go out and get a new boat. I'm always willing to help out and support a fellow CC member, and the last thing I would want is for any one to have to suffer through the summer with a broken boat! And don't worry about that offending cap, I'll take care of It.

Sorry to see that Eric. But it appears an over site from cobalt. ?? Almost makes me wonder if the rear hatch hinge hardware loosened and dropped as that is obviously its new resting place ( Does the bolt does seem high as compared to the others???)

Either way I'm sure they'll resolve it and improve the contact points.

I set mine slowly by using a RED Erasable marker and coated the top of the black stop . After a few open and closes when i saw it "barley" contacted the hatch . I locked it Down.

Good news is now one ever sees it. And YT is willing to take the burden for you.

That's interesting. Almost as if the designer's realized after the fact that the hatch on the end could flex with folks stepping on them. The fix would be to install some type of quick bumper system for support....although it's unfortunately too small. Great idea adding the steel plate to distribute the load.

What's interesting is mine doesn't have a black rubber gasket around the compartment like yours in the pics posted on the other thread.

I'll post pics when I finish the repair work.
Since it's the boarding passageway ... figure it won't hurt to have some extra support

I'm having a similar issue. Hasn't punched though the fiberglass but has worn itself down pretty good. I brought this issue up with the dealer a few years ago, and they gave me a handful of the rubber bumpers. I ran through them changing them every other month. I'm going to try and re adjust the bolt with the marker approach. Thanks for the tip.
now I need another batch of bumpers.

I'm really not sure why they wouldn't have put some kind of metal plate in there for added support versus just a rubber bumper pushing on fiberglass directly. It's a pretty focused amount of pressure if somebody steps there when boarding.

I just crawled into my engine compartment and adjusted them from the inside.

I know this is an older thread but figured I would ask here instead of starting a new thread. Has anyone found this bumper part number? Mine has 4 and 1 broke a coulple weeks ago. Today 2 more broke and fell off.

Anyone have photos of finished supports- I noticed during winterizing that three of the four Rubber Caps are broken. Haven’t located replacement parts yet.

After much research I found a company who makes these rubber caps. The company is JW Winco and the part number is GN806-19-A. They are described as "PROTECTIVE CAP NEOPRENE" and fit just fine over these supporting hex bolts. Theye are $1.04 each. Best to get a bunch as shipping runs $10.50 depending on where you live.

I used a little red grease on top of the cap once installed and it worked well to mark when the cap just contacted the underside of the hatch. Side note: On my 2014 Cobalt 220 two of the supports were not mounted by the factory under solid flat fiberglass but rather on a transition curve. This would not be good for intended support function. I havent decided if I want to move them to the correct spot or not. Not really worth the hassle and I dont see that hatch failing any time soon
