2015 R5 with a VP 6.0 350
2015 R5 with a VP 6.0 350
Purchasing a 2015 R5 with a VP 6.0 350c. (Non electronic. Not sure if the 6.0 had an EVC option) Engine has 65 hours. I can't find a lot of info on the 6.0 blocks. Lots of data on the 5.3 350 in an R5, but not much with the 6.0. I'm looking for some information on this combination. Looks like the 6.0 might have been a stop gap between the big block and new 6.2 380/430?
Does anyone have any information or experience with these blocks? From what I can tell, rated rpm is 6,000 instead of 5,800 like the new generation, and the 6.0 is about 125# heavier than the 5.3L. Also, is it possible to add and electronic throttle and gear control on a mechanical Volvo engine? I'm switching from an offshore boat with electronic fly by wire controls (Yamaha F350's), and just wondering if it is an option. The R5 will be freshwater lake boat though.
Any info or experience with the 6.0 350 would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: 2015 R5 with a VP 6.0 350
It's a chevy truck engine. They used it to replace the 8.1 block. And used it Between the 5.7 engine and the 6.2 and the 5.3 also.
Evc I'm not sure but I don't think so.
Good read.

Do you have an option to find an R5 with a 380 in it? With a dirty hull, gas, gear and a few people on board, I think the R5 you are looking at will make 43 - 45 mph at full throttle. If that is good enough for you then I suspect the motor in it will be fine as well. Good luck.

Re: 2015 R5 with a VP 6.0 350
I'm not seeing a lot of R5's close to where I live (Texas), with 380's, except a Surf here and there. I don't want a Surf model.
The boat will be lift kept and no bottom paint. I think you're correct, fully loaded, it's probably a 45mph boat. I'm more concerned with low end and mid range torque.
It has the 2.14 gear, so hopefully that will help.
I found some old Volvo literature where they did have an EVC option for this engine, so maybe it's possible to get digital controls. The local dealer didn't think it was possible, but it's only a 5 year old engine platform, I doubt many people have ever asked about doing it.

I have a 2017 R7 with the 6.0 430hp. I have EVC and have no complaints with it. Good hole shot. Lots of torque mid range. I wouldn’t shy away from this generation of Volvo. Not sure when they started including EVC....nor would I know if you can add it.

I'm pretty sure it was an option on the 6.0's but when VP went to the 6.2 they made it standard.Table Rockin wrote: Mon Oct 05, 2020 8:05 am I have a 2017 R7 with the 6.0 430hp. It would be interesting to me to see what difference, if any, there is between the 6.0 350 and the newer 5.3 350's. I've never been on an R5 with a 5.3 350, so I wont know, but looking forward to sea trialing the boat and seeing how the 6.0 feels. Thank you guys for your input.

I would think that you could feel the diff in the seat of your pants between the 2. Maybe BobRae can put the book specs out there between the 2 for us.stp wrote: Wed Oct 07, 2020 4:58 pm It would be interesting to me to see what difference, if any, there is between the 6.0 350 and the newer 5.3 350's. Sorry, I don't have them. I suspect you would feel the more responsive mid range of the new gen motor though. All of the new generation benefit from variable valve timing and direct injection which has made a significant difference to both time to plane and mid range acceleration. But, I'm sure the older generation 350 is more than adequate.Big Block Power wrote: Wed Oct 07, 2020 6:19 pmI would think that you could feel the diff in the seat of your pants between the 2. Re: 2015 R5 with a VP 6.0 350
Test drove the boat today. Full tank of fuel and 3 people aboard. Power feels good for the boat, very responsive and plenty of low end torque. We did throw some error codes. (The boat only has 67 hours and is a 2015). It hasn't been run for a while, and the Volvo tech said they need to change the plugs and run the boat to heat everything up. I don't know the specific code he said, just that several cylinders were not getting spark. They are going to change the plugs and run it this week, then I will test it again after that.
I do have a question about WOT RPM. The maximum RPM for this engine is 6,000. Is that rated or maximum? In my old world of offshore boats, we always at a minimum wanted to make rated rpm so engines were not overloaded. All I could manage was 5,500 - 5,600rpm. If some of the plugs were fouled and the engine wasn't making full power, that would explain some of it. But, I don't think thats going to make up 400rpm. My question is, where are most of these boats at WOT RPM wise? I know the 5.3's are 5,800 and the 6.2's are 6,000. Is it normal in a lake environment to be 2-300 under the rated or maximum RPM? Just trying to get a feel if the boat is over propped or the way it needs to be. Bottom, props, everything is clean, outdrive was trimmed out.

Re: 2015 R5 with a VP 6.0 350
That's max rpm. It should reach it. If it had bad plugs that could explain it. I doubt it has the wrong props on it. Otherwise yes it would have too high of pitch which would bring the rpm down. Never know what people do. Tuscany is doing this to his.
See what pitch is on it and see what it came with at the factory.
You never know if the PO traded it in because it kept throwing codes. Can you get prev records? If they can fix it all good you just don't want to be chasing codes all summer long.

PO ordered it new from this dealership. He's going thru a divorce and has to sell boat. Dealership has all the records and has done all the work on the boat. Props are original from the factory. Hopefully I'll be able to run it again next Saturday and the plugs sort it out.

I think they are, but it's a boat... Dealership has a good reputation, and I know a few of their longtime customers. If I can't get close to 6,000, then I'll look at switching out props.

There is no reason you can't hit 6000 Cobalt and volvo have that prop set up to hit it.stp wrote: Sat Oct 17, 2020 4:59 pm I think they are, but it's a boat...
