Chartplotter mounting in a tight space
Re: Chartplotter mounting in a tight space
Honestly I’d have to go play with it and let you know. I went ahead and had the transducer put on mine because my factory depth finder went out on me

I'm gonna replace my GO5 with the GO7 got it in the garage new in the box ready, just need to determine a mounting location. It won't fit in the same location as where I have my GO5. Too big. I miss the cubby hole for storing stuff.Ytmsn wrote: Fri Aug 03, 2018 5:27 pmYes, you can see the 7 better. Driller has a 5 too and I think he wishes he would have gotten a 7, but I actually like the 5.JTinMO wrote: Fri Aug 03, 2018 1:31 pmWhat are the cons to the suction cup mount? And what model Simrad is that? Sound like you have mixed experience with it.Ytmsn wrote: Fri Aug 03, 2018 1:04 pm I use the windshield mount and it works okay, but this fall I'm going to drill it into the dash over on the right.

You have the setup I was going to try to use, so very interested in your experience with it.
The windshield mount is fine and I like it, but it'll be a cleaner mount to the dash. The unit will go with the boat when I sell it so I'm not worried about screw holes.
My mount has only failed once when it was super hot and I had the cover on. I opened the boat to see it had come loose, but it's never happed since. I cleaned the mount area with alcohol on both the rubber and the glass and it's been stuck like paint ever since.
One of the advantages to this mount is sticking the whole thing up in the air so I can see it while standing underway. But if it was on the dash I'd just roll it back so I could glance down, and I think this is where a 7 would be better! I was just worried about covering up my other gages, but thrace says it isn't an issue.

Driller - What did you end up doing with mounting the G07?

Re: Chartplotter mounting in a tight space
I bought a Ram mount for my 7" Garmin (Echomap 70S, I think) I picked up a few years ago. Drilled bolt holes through the dash and cut a small metal backing plate for the dash underside and got the mount installed last fall. Once the boat is out of hibernation, I'll figure out the electrical and get it mounted up. It's wedged between the dash and the windshield on the left side of the wheel - more pictures coming when it's installed.

It is still setting in my garage. One of the other members mounted it is the same location as I have the G05. That's where I'm gonna mount it with the flush mount kit. I just need to get up my courage and then I'm gonna do it. The G05 is too small for my old eyes. One of the other members has done it and it looked great and it wasn't too big. With the flush mount it is just slightly larger than the contour of the dash, maybe 1/8" by my measurements.

Re: Chartplotter mounting in a tight space
After buying a reduced-length arm for the Ram mount, here's the final configuration, shown from the dash and from the back. Power simply plugged into an unused switched Molex connector from behind the dash (see the cable running toward the windshield and tucking between panels). I'm fairly pleased with how it fits and works.

He’s really tall for being two, which makes for some amusing encounters when people assume he’s three or four and try to talk to him. He had a blast in the lake and on the sand, though.
