06 Cobalt 282

Post by iwakeboard »

Hey all - I'm in the process of buying an immaculate 2006 Cobalt 282 (250 hours on the Merc 496 Mag HO). Took it out on Friday and I didn't know a boat that big could go that fast. I'm buying it without a trailer, will be keeping it on the water this season (or until the waitlist for a slip with a lift frees up). I had my trusted mechanic come out with me and he was smitten with it, said the engine sounded great. I'm having the dealership replace the boot, gimbal bearings, and the shift cable because it's time, all preventative, but no apparent issues. Anything to be weary of or to look for? I'd really like to add the lower swim platform, but the dealer said Cobalt won't support boats that far back and I'd have to go aftermarket. They recommended SwimPlatforms.com, anyone have any experience with them?

Hey Iw. Welcome to the Cobaltchat forum. So glad you found us!

Great pic of your 282. That preventative maintenance will pay off too.

We had one member on here add an aftermarket swim platform to his 252. T550 may chime in.

How about an engine pic.

Again welcome aboard mate!

Some inboard and outboard shots. I've owned wakeboats for 15 years and haven't had an I/O since I was in college, so it'll take some getting used to (especially the speed).

Nice iw. She’ll be a handful for sure with a single engine. Practice your crosswind docking on a buoy away from shore.

Btw thunder550 used swimplatforms.com which he documented here.

...and thanks for the pics.

I was wondering about that, with as tall as the boat is. I'm pretty experienced with inboards and my 24' Supra was underpropped, so I've been in some tight and tricky situations before, but certainly plan to practice (and to have my wife practice). Thanks!

Welcome from California going forward!.
You will loce the ride and the abilty to cross your ol wake surf wakes coming at you with just a smile as you motor through them.

I see she has the transom shower, and underwater lights! both fun packages you will enjoy.
Keep us posted on the swim platform!

Hey Matt! Thanks, I see you too have a 282. Is that your boat in your thumbnail image? I actually don't know what the color of the LED lights are, so if they're red that's good to know!

Anyone have experience replacing the head unit on a 282? Any particular unit recommendations? Any luck using the existing remote, or a remote replacement that doesn't leave gaps or holes in the dash?
