2005 Cobalt 220 Trailer Question
Greetings,
I am currently in the process of buying a 2005 220 with low hours. Boat is clean, fired up first key turn, love everything about it. Went to the dealer yesterday to check everything over one more time before finalizing the deal. One thing I didn’t pay much attention to was the trailer until yesterday. Trailer appears too small for the boat, with about 2 feet hanging off the backside of the bunks. This doesn’t appear to be a very safe trailering setup, especially if I wanted to take her on a nice road trip. There is no way to strap the back down with how it is currently sitting unless I want to scratch up the gel coat with the long straps. Dealer listed on buyers order $4k for the trailer (different year and manufacturer than Cobalt). Talked to them yesterday about finding a different one and said I’d only get about half that on trade. So my question is why would I buy their $4k trailer that isn’t big enough to only turn around and get $2k in trade value on a different one? How would you all approach this? Any good options for replacement trailers? Dealer said a new on would be around $5,500 which I don’t have a problem with but not losing $3,500 on trade difference. Really want the boat as I live 2 minutes from the launch but it just doesn’t seem right. Hate for a trailer to break the deal. Any thoughts/advice appreciated. Thanks!

Re: 2005 Cobalt 220 Trailer Question
Welcome. First of all I wouldn't worry about the trailer! Someone must have hit the dock rant hard as they didn't match the gel coat at all. It's all black in 1 spot.
Ok seriously that trailer might be for a 200 not a 220.
So easy he's wanting 4k for the trailer. Tell him to keep it and buy the new one get a loadmaster trailer for $5500 or so and done deal. Or if he only wants to give you 2k for the trailer give him 2k less for the boat. See easy. You could sell that trailer for maybe 2k on your own but that doesn't solve your problem. Congrats and good luck. I hope that trailer wasn't sitting on that boat is whole life. Because the transom can get a hook in it with no support. I think they just stuffed that trailer under it. The wench stand has been moved a bunch. Also the trailer will have a manufacturer sticker on it with model number and serial number and capacity on it. Look at it and call ezloader and see what it was built for.

Re: 2005 Cobalt 220 Trailer Question
Ha yes dock rash... Since I don’t technically own it yet I thought I should remove the registration numbers and plate before listing. There was an old bill of sale in the glovebox from 2013 that had the trailer listed ($2,400 at time of sale). Hopefully it was on a lift and only used for transport once in awhile. Is there anyway to identify said “hook” in the hull? I don’t have a lift so it will be trailered and stored in garage. Hoping to work something into the deal so we can get on the water soon but don’t want to overpay for what I’m getting. Just want to be safe when towing as I have young kids and wife to enjoy this with. As the saying goes boat stands for Bust Out Another Thousand. Already feeling that and dont even own it yet. Love the cobalts and hope it works out! Appreciate the quick response.

.
Hey TGL Welcome to the Cobaltchat forum. So glad you found us!
Thanks for posting pics. Nice color combo.
Boat sales are smoking hot right now. He may just sell it to another buyer depending on the market in your area. Honestly if the seller does not have another trailer to sell you, I would still try to negotiate the total price down based on your info and then sell that trailer and pick up another one. If it’s exactly what you want (which it sounds like it is) then I would jump on it. Sell the trailer outright, after buying a nice new one.
Big picture though, I would not keep the wrong size trailer under the right size boat for you.
Again welcome aboard mate!

Re: 2005 Cobalt 220 Trailer Question
Thank you. Brand new to this forum posting stuff too, might be the first time ever but have found them so helpful over the years. You are 100% correct. I’ve looked from Wisconsin to Florida (located in MO) and there isn’t another boat listed I’d buy right now in my price range. Everything is moving fast and usually sold before I can even inquiry. Back sundeck needs new
Vinyl, trim gauge doesn’t work ($900 quoted for that fix) and tach is pretty iffy. But for a 15 year old boat with less than 400 hours she’s very clean and mechanically sound. Just don’t want to keep finding issue after issue and the trailer deal started to push me away. But there is plenty of fun to be had. I guess that’s what owning a boat is like??? Will try to renegotiate price and go from there. Thanks everyone!

Ha. Kids baseball today. Was supposed to have it detailed and ready to go by this weekend but have to figure out the trailer now first. It’s got the 350 Mercruiser Bravo Three.

Re: 2005 Cobalt 220 Trailer Question
Welcome and fingers crossed you get it sorted.
Yes the trailer is an issue. As your transom core is where inside bunks should be resting.
This forward can put a “ hook “ in the hull after repeated towing and generally supported weight being in the thinnest part of the hull.

Yes the 350 mag is solid and b3 is great too. I'm nosey. You don't have to say but that boat range is 25k 23k with that trailer just my opinion. The senders are common and the sundeck is common. Tach 75 bucks to send it out and get it fixed to faria. Winter project. Or just buy all new guages new look 150 bucks. Any questions shoot away I know the 200 and 220 very well. You will love the boat. It's a great hull.2nd to the 190

Like A7 said of price is right jump on it and get a new trailer no matter what!!! Fix the sundeck this winter. They offer 10% off then too. It's a 700 dollar deal.

Re: 2005 Cobalt 220 Trailer Question
The other issue you will have is the boat/ trailer will fish tail going down the road due to too much weight behind the axle. Will make for some anxious trips to the ramp!cmattj wrote: Wed Jun 03, 2020 8:07 am Welcome and fingers crossed you get it sorted.

Re: 2005 Cobalt 220 Trailer Question
Thanks BBP! Took some advice on this thread. They pulled the trailer out of the deal and then up'd the boat price to $24k + new trailer of $6k. That doesnt do any good as bank is only going to loan so much on it. They dont care if its a 1960's trailer or 2020. Bill of sale had them as roughly $21k for boat, $4k for trailer. I get when they take it in on trade its a package deal. Price is right, boat is good. Wouldn't budge on final price so I decided to take package as is and explore finding a used trailer or just pay cash for a new one here soon. Being two minutes from the boat launch Im not going too far just yet. Still waiting on them to get all the paperwork in so I can get chack from the bank. Hopefully this time next week. I'll post pics once I am the official owner. Appreciate all the input from everyone in this thread!Big Block Power wrote: Wed Jun 03, 2020 12:23 pm Yes the 350 mag is solid and b3 is great too. Side note - If anyone comes across a used trailer for an 05 220, Im interested. Ive reached out to Loadmaster and Boatmate for a new one. They are steep but it will be needed. Just not real close to me and add another $1250 for delivery.
Thanks guys!!

Re: 2005 Cobalt 220 Trailer Question
Is this from a dealer on the water? If not call the closest dealer that also does rack storage. I know Gordy’s had a few “used” trailers people ordered with their boat but never used because it’s racked year round when I was looking.
