R3vsR23SC vs R5 or R25SC

Post by Sieben »

sold my 22 center console with a 135 HP yanmar diesel.looking for a comfortable boat for four to five people. Lake and river runs are the focus but could also see intercoastal waterway action. Must be trailerable for two.

Price for the 23CS is awful attractive. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Hey Sieben. Welcome to the Cobaltchat forum. So glad you found us!

I think that 23CS has your name all over it. :D

Are you set on an outboard powered boat?

How about a pic of your 22 center console? We enjoy pics here.

Again welcome aboard mate!

I'm not set on an OB, It just makes sense if its in Salt. That and Cobalt has some nice savings on the 23SC right now on the website. Pocket book sez R3 or an SC23. Heart sez R5 or R7. Trailer boating sez R5 or smaller. R series seem more upscale. SC23's are hard to find in the KC region.

Trying to keep the budget around $100K or so with trailer....other boat was great but used diesel, hard to find in this area at docks and the seating was not conducive to ladies catching sun.

Beautiful high bow lines from a classic working boat style in great shape and best part it's dog friendly. You're on the right track...for salt, an outboard is the way to go. The ride is going to be totally different from what you're used to. My guess is you are going to feel like you are driving a Ferrari. You will also gain huge points in the comfort department. R3/SC23 size is pretty manageable on a trailer. R5/sc25 still trailerable and managable. I've never met anyone who said---"You got an R series? What were you thinking". Given you're outline, you can't go wrong with either.

One more point, the Inboard will have a swim platform which is really nice for getting dogs on and off if they like the water.....speaking from personal experience here.

Will you leave the boat in the water or drop it in, use and then haul out and trailer? If the latter, do you need to opt for an outboard (question coming from a fresh water boater)?

Drop, use, haul. Longest it would be in salt or fresh water would be a week at a time. Salt maybe two weeks total per year.

That's one of the thing I love about boats. I love the looks of that boat, the bow flare, the transom, but even as clean and pretty as it is, it's not for me. I like to look at pure ski boats, cruisers, deck boats, even pontoons, but they are not for me. I like to look at off shore battle wagons, but again, not for me. Wood boats, I really like to look at them, and really really appreciate what their owners have to go through to have stewardship of them, but again, not for me. One of the things that attracted me to the Cobalt line is they look like boats.

It's what Water Rat said, “Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing–absolutely nothing–half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”

Except Bass boats. I don't understand bass boats.

Curious what you sold the old boat for. Love the inboard center console setup. Great boat for me and the dog to go swimming.
I have an R3. I may be wrong, but the 23SC is even more aggressively priced. If i lived in saltwater, hands down I would go outboard
