232 trim gauge

Post by justchillin »

Question about the trim gauge indications. How far up should the trim gauge show with the drive full up? Mine shows full down with it down but I’m guessing it’s off a little in the full up position.

I’ve got a Volvo. I had some post season work done, typical end of year stuff. One of the items was replacing the hydraulic trim cylinders. The drive itself moves the full range up and down. The indicator shows full down when it’s down and part way up when it’s full up.

I mentioned it to the mechanic that did the work but he said it’s because I’ve got a swim platform. I’m gonna run it by him again with pics but wanted to see if anyone here had some input. Like is it adjustable or is it a sensor replacement etc.

the trim gauge probably works based on the upper and lower voltages of the sender pucks on the outdrive. Cobalt will limit the UP side of that because otherwise they will hit the swim platform on some models. I am taking an educated guess that its reflected in the gauge and that you will never see the needle go all the way to UP.

Sounds right and we just gave you quotes “”
As long as once it reaches full in. And moves with first movement your good. Unless you running mechanical indicators there is no perfect trim gauge.

Not sure how the Volvo trim senders work but if it is like the Mercs you can adjust them. On a Merc you loosen the hold down screws of the sender, turn on the ignition to power the gauges and with the drive in a full down position you rotate the sender. As you do the needle will move and when you have it where you like it tighten the screws.

Like I said, not sure how the Volvos work as I have never owned one but there should be an adjustment.

That's why my first question was which drive do you have. Merc is adjustable Volvo is not. So with the drive all the way up does it hit or come close to the swim platform? Volvo senders are know to go bad quite often. I have one on the brink right now too.

On my 272, the volvo outdrive has the rotatable sender, sounds exactly like the one described for the Merc.
Different senders on different models/years?
