Oil in the bilge (496 HO)

Post by cycleboater »

I was hoping that oil residue in my bilge was from something other than an oil leak (a spill or something). That hope is now diminished. I cleaned my bilge and the oil has returned. Where are the most likely areas on a 496 HO engine that oil would leak? I plan on getting a good light, mirror and phone camera to have a good look around the engine to see if I can locate where it's coming from. Tips would be appreciated.

Check all fluid levels. Which one is low. Is it 100%engine oil?
Frt crank seal? Oil pan, intake, cam or crank sensor, rear main, oil galley plug, oil cooler lines, oil filter? Matt am I missing any?

You pretty much covered it.
I would look underneath cooler lines as they can hiss out oil at the swedge ( where the fitting and rubber hose meet).
Also insure your dipstick hasn’t popped up slightly as after a hard run high crankcase pressure and weak pcv systems can try and push oil.
The last step is put oil pad on each side of the stringer to see it plausible starting location.

I appreciate the suggestions. I hope it a line leak and not the engine itself....

I heard from the service department today. The oil is coming from the oil pressure sensor fitting. Not cheap to fix but better than a oil pan or some other engine leak. Hopefully this closes the loop on this topic.

Na let's keep it open and get pictures of this leak. Should not be too bad of a fix. Lots of elbow room in there.

I plan on calling back and getting more details on this repair. He called me when I could not discuss it. After looking into it a bit, I am not certain why the cost is so much ($670) if it is simply a fitting on a sensor. It is my first experience with this dealer and their reputation is stellar, but I will double check anyway.
