2018 R7 Surf shifting issue

Post by jdunn »

while using the boat at Powell 2 weeks ago I experienced an issue with the shifter. While in marina while shifting from neutral to reverse it would frequently not go into gear. The stick would move but nothing would happen. A warning light would flash by the gear indicator on the shifter housing, a repetitive beep would sound, a text warning came up on the Volvo/Penta square display that would read, "Warning, Check shift controller" or something similar to that. I could move the shifter from F to N to R but the drive would no longer shift, it would just remain in neutral. To reset it, I would turn engine off, wait 5 seconds and restart and would shift normally. Sometimes this would happen once a day, sometimes it would happen repeatedly 5-10 times in a row while docking. Please help.

Has to be something with the evc module. I'd contact your dealer.

I'm currently struggling with a similar issue with my R7 (non-Surf). My shifter issue manifests itself in a few different ways:
1) Turn the key on and the EVC and "Glass" doesn't light up. Tapping the shifter usually makes everything wake up normally
2) Sometimes glass comes up but will not crank/start - same solution usually gets it going.
3) I will sometimes get an error on the EVC while underway "Key Failure", loud beep, and check engine light. Usually clears on next startup.

My boat has been at the dealer more than in the water this year. This is the most serious of failures but it's still frustrating.

I hear you. I haven't posted about all of my "issues" yet with the boat, this is just the most recent. I've only taken mine to the dealer once to fix a completely failed surf system. I won't take it back for other warranty repairs until all items are in stock and scheduled. Last time it was there it sat outside during windy fire season and I'm still cleaning ash off the seats and nooks and cranny's.

I know this is a really old thread but did you find out the issue? My boat appears to be having the same issue

Mine ended up being a replacement of the shifter assembly. Hope this helps.
