How much "bump" should I hear when shifting from neutral to forward or reverse?

Each one is a bit diff. My rev. Is more than forward. Pretty much nothing forward.

I had your exact Engine & 8.1 DuoProp VP setup in our Cobalt 262. There is definitely a noticeable but low sounding “thump” heard when shifting in and out of gear. Just a very faint ratcheting can be heard from the cone clutches as you start the shift with the separate shifter. Owned ours and operated it that way for almost 10 years. It’s a very reliable system.

Btw, what’s your idle RPM? It should hover around 650-800 rpm’s for smooth shifting operation.

I have two Volvos behind me, and both have a slight different feel.
Its the timing of engagement ( no delay ) That is more the key than the thunk.... or lack of they create. No worries as I like a sharp engagement.
