Stereo issues

Post by Norris_Boating »

Looking for suggestions, I have been having intermittent issues with my stereo. Cobalt/Travis have come to the lake to try to fix it 4 times. At seemingly random times the radio will reset repeatedly until I turn the battery off then back on. Other times the remotes will stop responding to input (ie turning volume up/down), and sometimes the screen on the remotes won't turn on. Occasionally the software settings get so messed up from the constant restarts require factory reset on the audio and software settings.

They have replaced the head unit, replaced the Y connector for the remotes, upgraded the software/firmware, had a battery issue and they replaced the battery/checked the grounds.

They are committed to fixing it and are going to keep trying through the off season, just curious if any one has any suggestions.

Here is a link to example vids of what is happening.

I'm having a similar issue and am talking to my dealer about solutions. Luckily on mine, if I already have it on bluetooth, it and the volume control still works. I can reboot and restart 50 times and it doesn't fix it. That said, it will randomly work fine. I'm wondering if the source button is sticking?

I had the same exact issue with mine and it ended up being a faulty head unit. I called my dealer they called cobalt and Cobalt sent out a new head unit to them to replace the next day.

We just found a Rockford Fosgate service bulletin for this exact issue. There is a software update for the head unit to correct.

It is not easy to access the head unit.... it is located under the passenger floor area accessed through the head compartment. I can give you the files to update and instructions or we can take care of it in September.

Thank you,
Bobby Ecker

Cool sounds like 2019 want kind to rf owners. Like everything today is a software fix. Nice and easy as long as you can get to the unit.

That is my current version I updated from their site. Nothing in their release notes talks about this issue.
It isn't that hard to update as it is via USB port where you would plug in your phone.

We are having the same issues on our R5. Started acting up last month. Hopefully it is just an update issue.

I'll check mine out this weekend. Nice find. I told my dealer if the head unit fails again I'm ripping it out and putting in something different. I still do not get why Cobalt put all JL audio equipment in the 19's but still the RF head unit and remotes. And shocked to still see them in the '20 models. Especially with all the issues they have had with the RF units.

When I scroll down to download the zip file for the PMX-1R it says that this model has to be updated by RF themselves. Which update file did you use? Or did you call that number and send in your head unit?

Sorry to revive an old post. Having the exact issue as mentioned in the original post. Thanks!

Hey J555…welcome to the Cobaltchat forum. So glad you found us!

My dealer has access to RF update capabilities. If I see him I’ll ask if it’s possible for consumers to do this update.

Any pics of your Cobalt?

Again welcome aboard mate!

Thanks for the info! Just spoke with the service department and they said they should be able to update it easily. I'll post in here with the result.

Appreciate the welcome message as well. That inspired me to make this thread in the "member intro" section: viewtopic.php?f=45&t=5364 Didnt want to hijack this one haha
