Very impressive! And yes, thanks for your service. My father was a Annapolis grad and Korean War vet. He always had the utmost respect for the “Steely-eyed killers of the deep”.

Okay, I've been on here awhile, so here goes. Born and raised in Ohio, 3rd of 4 kids (dad is an ex-Marine who was in management at our local GM plant). Grandfather had a Lyman on Lake Erie, spent many an hour on that boat trying not to be seasick and how to fish. Dad's best friend also had Bayliners up in Manastee Bay in upper MI. We even had a rowboat on our lake and a pool in our yard. And I swam in throughout middle school, high school, college and have done Master. So I guess you could say I grew up on/in water
For the first 15 years after college, I did various jobs. Ran an Au Bon Pain (during the recession in the 90s), operations manager for a carpet company, restaurant server. Did a stint in the Peace Corps in West Africa that was cut short due to a military coup. Came to Boston, where I did more serving, was the office/accounting mgr for a catering company, ran a bike touring company, then owned my own bike touring company. It was then I realized I would go broke doing a job I loved...so I switched over to working for the man. Worked in Finance/Accounting for a software company, which eventually led me to my current employer, a very large global consulting organization, where I run an IT practice.
Luckily, have been off the road for awhile, so I actually had 10 minutes to get a dog and a boat. Yay!

My favorite thread.
Well, for those of us who did not go to college, some of the journeys shared here are really neat..
It seems those who elect to go into business, morph over the years into something they never set out to do, or was ever in their realm of thought. I think the successful self employed all share the same trait, and that’s to not be afraid of changing...ever..
Without getting preachy, There has been some great advice that helped me along the way that I’d like to share for the young guys self employed here, and maybe all:
I once heard the saying “be careful of what you get good at”. Sometimes, that can become a lifetime trap if you are unhappy and not willing to risk change to improve and grow.
The other piece of advice that I would also like to share is this, “if it ain’t broke, break it”.

After reading thru this thread, Im just a lowly international sales coordinator for a smaller family owned worldwide corporation of which I would not like to name. The only perc is not being kept in an office all day long. I chase orders from small parts to whole $1M machines thru the factory and everything in between to complete a sale.

Time for a change.
After 32yrs rescuing people on the water I've told my employer(Coast Guard) I'm not returning to work when my leave is used up.
Instead I'll be going to the distillery to focus on the vineyard and property. It will be different working a Mon-Fri gig and not being "on call".
I'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of the world lives. The option of coming home from work and being able to have a relaxing meal and a drink is something I've never experienced.
Come on SUMMER!

I am flying into ATW airport. I am coming to check on a friend of mine that actually owns car dealerships. Somehow he snookered me into helping fund an outdoor ice skating facility in a downtown area in one of the downtowns nearby, and so he wants me to see the progress being made.Big Block Power wrote: Tue Mar 23, 2021 6:01 amIf we have a car left on the lot.
