New Member from 1000 Islands/Lake Ontario

Post by Johnson@H20town »

Good morning,
I joined last week in the anticipation of buying a Cobalt and I made it official Saturday after the sea trial. The wife wanted a to get back into boating after our kids grew up a little (I have a 5,3, and 15 month old). I made it clear that I was only interested in a Cobalt and she (not kidding) "said isn't that a car"? Fast forward to a month ago, I found this ad for a 1997 232 for sale on Cayuga Lake. I contacted the owner and the guy was a gentlemen. I made arrangements to meet. I fell in love with the boat and put a deposit down. It was still cold and the water levels were low there but we finally got together this past Saturday and the boat ran as good as I had hoped. She in now ours!

We plan on boating in our area of Clayton/Alex Bay. We will do a trip to Lake George and the Great Sacandaga Lake (where I grew up). Glenn, who I bought the boat from ( and is going to join the chat) invited me down his way to meet up. I believe he bought a 2012 232.

I will be looking to the great information on the site to keep her running in tip top shape. Here are some of the items I plan on working on this year. If you have any thoughts, please share.

*Fixing the trim gauge accuracy
*Fix the letter T (Big Block Power sent me to the right place)
*Bringing back the slight fade on the rear of the boat

Other than that she is pretty mint for her age.

Thanks for reading and have a great week!

Hey j@h20town, welcome to the Cobaltchat forum. So glad you found us!

Love the story. 👍🏻 Great pics and intro too. 👌🏻

Trim gauge accuracy is fixed by loosening the screws holding the sensor near the trim rams on the outdrive. Loosen...rotate clockwise or counterclockwise slightly...tighten. Before you do that place the outdrive all the way down if you can to have a base starting point.

Again, welcome aboard mate!

Great looking boat! Trailer looks like it's from the 50's, lol.

As far as trim gauge accuracy, keep us posted because mine is terrible and I've run through all iterations of adjustment at the leg.

I'll have to remember to post a picture. There's a guy near me that lifts his high enough to wet slip another boat underneath.

Welcome from California! Sharp one you got there! Wow someone loce it. I see you’ve experienced roller bunks ? Terrified yet as you can launch it from the parking lot!
Looks as if she’s in a lift so your trailer is secondary but you may want to convert it to carpet bunks.
Looking forward to your travels!

Thanks for the comments! The boat house isn't mine ( I just have a lowly dock up in Cape Vincent but I have a goal now to build one of those), I just asked the old owner to raise it up for inspection. Bfun, you are correct though....he does create a wet slip for visitors. The guy I bought it from was top notch. He obviously took care of the boat and his wife was emotional about selling it. They got a newer 232 because it was easier for them to get on and off through the back as they are getting older. They even went as far and having breakfast ready for my boat inspector/old friend and our kids we brought. I am taking him up on his offer to come back down, he is smack dab in the Finger Lakes Wine Country Region. I was reluctant about buying a boat this old but between the seller and my two inspections " I feel good......I knew that I would"!

I do plan on getting a newer trailer with carpet bunks but a new one was a little more than I wanted to spend. Daycare cuts into my "fun budget" a little.

It figures that we have been getting rain for a few days straight here which is furthering the flooding on Ontario. I am hoping by Memorial Day me and the family can get out.

Also, I should have mentioned that the boat is powered by the 5.7 GSI Volvo Penta/ Duoprop. I can't get over how quiet the motor is when you are in the boat.

Best,

EJ
