2001 Cobalt 190

Post by tallrobbo »

Hi guys
I could do with some help and advice.
Im considering purchasing a 2001 Cobalt 190. Im worried about rotten transoms, floors and stringers. I have been searching all day for information on these boats having been terrified by the youtube series of videos of the Sea Ray rebuild.
Can anyone confirm if the transoms on this boat are now "rot proof" foam and if the stringers are still in fact plywood, if so is rot as common as other boats?
The boat if fitted with a 4.3Gi Volvo, is there anything else I should be looking for?

thanks in advance

No worries. All fiberglass. Plus if they used plywood it was marine grade then coated with Resin. Go ahead and buy the bad boy. If your really worried get a moisture meter or get a Survey done on her. Where is she? Is it was it stored outside? Pictures.

Previously owned a 97 190 with the 4.3. Sold it 2 years ago to some friends with 1000 hours then and she's still ripping up and down the lake!

It's a great boat! Get it checked out for peace of mind!

Hello tallrobo. Welcome to the CobaltChat forum. So glad you found us!

Like the others mentioned, all fiberglass in these later model Cobalts when it comes to structure.

A marine survey is always prudent (or at least a friend who is also knowledgeable to help in the decision making process).

We expect pictures as we love them here!

Again, welcome aboard mate!

I'd be more concerned about the 4.3 than stringer rot. The 190 isn't a "light" boat in relative terms. They're built solid.

Poke around for a 5.0 or 5.7 duo if you can on that setup and you'll be pumped.

How dare you call the greatest boat ever made fat.

Our 190 was propped up a bit but we hit low 50's with the 4.3.

Thanks guys. Im in the UK and Cobalts are like rocking horse doo dah here. I would love...love a 5.0MPI but that on a cobalt is up there with unicorns and father xmas. The boat is on ebay.co.uk. It has 135 hrs and its a 4.3GI so I guess 200 or so hp. Looks very nice. Guy will sell for £8500 GBP so around $12k USD. Engines at worst is a day and $5k, rotten wood is a pain in the arse and weeks or work, sticky, smelly and wife would do horrible things to my privates if I bought a lemon

Check out www.ebay.co.uk and search for 264299434810 as I cant figure out how to upload an image.

thanks for your help so far and your warm welcome

Ahhh. It's got the blue piping. Looks clean and the price is right.

I'd seriously doubt there's any soft spots on it. Bonus points for the name.

Where in the UK are you located?

Hi guys

I am now a fully fledged member of the group. Picked up today. Engine really does sound like 135 hrs, new manifolds, risers etc. Had a GOOD look and a thorough tap along the stringers etc. The floor is all glass and everything looks very good. Hull is MINT!! The only areas that need work is flaking paint on the window frame and some upholstery needs a retrim.
Cant wait to get it wet. What speed should I expect? I will be happy with 35 knots.
Where do I get a swim platform from? How does it fit and finally for the record how do I post pictures when ready?

thanks

Welcome to the cult...I mean club. You better not change that name, it's epic! With the right prop that 4.3 should push that boat to 50mph no problem.

Congrats and welcome. If you can get a swim platform you can check with swimplatform.Com not sure how much shipping would be to get it to you.

Not sure what prop was on our old 190 but it also had the 4.3 and easily saw 50 mph in smooth conditions. You will love it!

Buddy that bought ours put the platform on the back... I'll see if I can get a pick and post it up for you. They love it, gives more room for their kids swimming and playing!
