Uh oh. PROBLEM. Tilt/Trim

Post by JTinMO »

Tried to raise/lower the motor this afternoon and heard fluid hitting the driveway. Stopped and looked, and saw the attached leak in the tilt/trim system. Now motor will not raise.

Who knows anything about this system. Is this a DIY replacement, or do I need to take it in for repair? I understand it's a closed system.

Anyone know a Volvo part # for this?

It's the Volvo 8.1L engine, DPS-A Drive 1.95.

HELP!!!!!!

Motor is fine. Looks to need a new housing. From the interwebs folks this appears to be the old design that will fail in this manner. Part appears to be Volvo Penta Trim & Tilt Pump System Repair Kit #21945911, fo a cool $450.
Found a post on iboats covering this, and seems easy enough to tackle. Drive does not need pulled off to perform.

Think I may go for it.

Anyone ever fix this on theirs, or have experience with it to talk me into it, or out of doing it myself?

You beat me to it. The family that bought my 222 from me had the same thing happen to them in their driveway after a perfect day of boating. I guess that is a common issue. He called Volvo and they covered the part I believe. He just had to pay labor at the dealer. I think that's how it went down.

Well, I ordered the new housing kit and 3 bottles of tilt/trim fluid. There’s no proprietary or weird tools needed to do this fix, so I’m going for it. I hate to pay the labor costs for items I can do myself. Just wish there were more weekends left for boating. I’m almost into October now before taking it out again.

Realized I forgot to report back on this......

I received the new kit (new design housing). Dug into it and did the swap a couple weeks ago on a Saturday morning. Took about 2 hours taking it slow, so not a big deal. The trim pump was fine. Hardest part by far is running the new hoses to the cylinders correctly, and supporting the outdrive on blocks while it's happening.

Buttoned it all up the way it came apart, filled up with fluid, and she works like new again.

Pics of pump inside after removal of original housing, new housing interior shot, and finally the installed end result.

All in cost me about $450 for the new housing kit and fluid. Compared to a marina doing this would have been over a grand easy. It's a DIY job.
