Trailer opinions for 220

Post by Jeffb »

Grettings All!

Recently picked up a 2015 220 and the dealer added a needed trailer. I believe the trailer is too low, but they tell me “it’s fine”. I’m looking for others opinions on the setup. To me, the skeg seems way to close to the road, and it’s already rubbed the road/inclines a few times; as well as the boat/fender gap is there, but not much clearance. I’m thinking taller bunk brackets? I couldn’t find a ‘minimum safe road height’ for the outdrive, but what do you think? Raise the bunks?

Thanks in advanced!

Hey Jeffb, congrats on your new baby! :D What size engine did you go with my Cobalt friend?

Yes, that skeg looks too low. Surprised your outdrive does not raise higher. Do you have the two step trim switch? ....In this set-up, one switch is on the side of the throttle which is used to trim the outdrive up to a certain limit while running on the water. Then there is the "trailer switch" which is underneath the topside of the throttle (& used to raise the outdrive all the way up past the running limit for trailering).
....or maybe that is the highest your outdrive will raise due to the swim platform.

In any event, I would definitely raise the bunks or find a way to get her higher. That skeg will certainly "bottom out" on areas of the road.

Keep posting those pics....and welcome aboard mate!

That's setup pretty low. I know on my trailer I can lower the outdrive all the way and it will not touch the ground. I would say see if you can raise the bunks a good 3-4" and see how that looks.

Good news is you can probably put it the garage with the Bimini down.

As A7 said your step is the reason your limiting switch is set low. There know for hitting the drive when owners trim for shallow water anchoring.

Have the dealer set the full up ( trailer) trim higher and just make a mental note when using the step.

Thanks all! The outdrive doesn’t go any higher as it’s against the platform when full up. The bunks are at the highest settings already, but I was looking at replacement brackets from West Marine to raise it another 2 inches and have them installed when I’m back at the boat. I cannot put the drive all the way down on the trailer at all, it hits. So far I’m loving this boat, but these nuances are killing me lol.

Sounds good.
FWIW, I can put my drive all the way down while my boat is on the trailer and still have an inch to spare. Definitely need to raise your boat up higher for more ground clearance. :D :D :D

Definitely low. If you can’t raise the outdrive due to swim platform clearance then you have to raise the bunks. Not sure how to do that but I would push back on the dealer. What brand is the trailer? Maybe a letter to their customer service department would yield some ideas

Yea get new brackets. I can't lower my drive all the way on mine. It hits. In the off season I back up on a block of wood so I can drop it down and I lower the jack also. But mine also sits way higher than yours.

Can you return trailer for proper one? Doesn't seem right they sent you out the door with that trailer.

+1 I'd lean on them a little. I don't know what they charged you for that trailer, but it may be worth taking it back and getting a refund and then finding your own trailer that fits the boat rather than spending money on this one after you've already bought it.

If you're into the trailer cheap, or they threw it in with the deal, then yes raising the bunks is the way to go, You can also get taller tires. You're going to need new tires anyway.
