What speeds should I be seeing on my 226?

Post by stan1541 »

I have a 2006 226 with the 5.7 GXI with Volvo DP and a F4 prop set. I read on here that the 226 hull is the fastest and people claim to hit 50+ at 5200 RPMS.

I run at altitude in Utah at 4400 ft at a minimum. I don't see my RPM's get over 4750 at WOT and I just got GPS 43mph the other day with full fuel and 800 lbs of passengers.

It is not that I need to go as fast as possible, it is just that I'm wondering, with a new to me boat, is something not performing like it should?

Thanks!

It would seem that your set up would easily do 50+ mph. You have 320 php and your boat is lighter then mine. If it's trimmed out right, I wouldn't see a problem with it hitting 50. I have to pull back at 65 mph but i'm running a 496 with 425 php.

You need to drop some pitch to run up there. That boat at sea level should hit 55 no problem. A 220 with the same engine does 54 no prob.

We had a 1999 226 with 7.4 310hp, it would run 63 - 64 (gauge) at about 1000ft.

I replied to your pm.

Are you trimming the drive to lift the hull or keeping it trimmed in. An f4 seems awful small and I would think you would be higher in the rpm range. Might be worth it to check some easy stuff. Plugs, wires, etc.

On my 226 with a 375hp 496, I'm in the upper 50s at 2500 feet of elevation and low 60s at sea level. I run f9s at sea level and just put f7s on to see how they do.

Also he could have a totally diff great ratio. Do you have a1.95?
It says it on the port side of your drive.

It’s sounds right.

Consider your at 4400ft Elevation. But. Your density altitude or true elevation is actually higher due to heat.. humidity .. low presser and water grains that create a elevation of 5400 ft. Or much more

I’m at sea level 0.. but my density altitude can be as high a 3000 ft on a 100 deg 45% humidity low barometer day etc.

Your 5-6 mph faster with another 450 rpm.

I'll check my gear ratio. Always possible I have mountain greats.

Cmatt, as a pilot, I know all to well the effects of density altitude. My airport is 4400 ft and the other day I took off at 8700 density altitude. Needed most of my 6000 ft runway. But, I never thought about how it affects the volvo. Does the carb adjust to run leaner?

A7 will be happy to see a pilot aboard! Glad you understand the DA.

I’m not sure you have a High elevation calibration or set up by the sound of it. No worries as boats are generally rich across the band as they endure load Constantly.

And like your plane.. sticks to the dash to take off ... well your baby is down 50 hp up there as well.
Taking pitch away would help free it up and not lug and possibly pick up 2-3 mph at 5000 rom.

But as long as your not leaving it wide open for long periods and straining it, you may enjoy having a good fast cruise speed with the F4 props.

Your fast for that DA with the 5.7 gxi.!

Stan your engine set up does not have a carburetor. It's fuel injected. Buck Rogers we are in the 21 century!
Only Nola and a few others have carbs.
It really depends on how you want to run if you are always going to be in that altitude drop a pitch or 2. Or go boat in the delta sewer and go fast🤣

Research shows that high water contamination ( sewer) , equals increased buoyancy, which equals speed.

Read it on the internet 🤣

The buoyancy keeps from hitting that delta sludge. I did about 40 miles in the delta with a group a number of years ago after launching at Orwoods. A blast and nerve wracking at the same time in some of the smaller channels.

Nice to have you around. I also fly aircraft around Utah, mostly out of Provo and Bountiful. If you see a green Cobalt 232 on Deer Creek or Jordanele it might be me, with occasional trips to Flaming Gorge and Lake Powel.
