Winterize with a push of a button on new Volvo's...

Post by Jeggleston »

Anyone have any feedback on this feature that I'm being told came out on the 2017-2018 volvo engines? I've watched the video and read about it, but haven't heard from actual owners. I plan on getting the boat professionally winterized still, but will any of you take yours out for a ride on a warm January day then use this self winterization control button to drain the water from the engine... and be able to sleep at night trusting it works with no issues? ...

I think tuscany is the only one with it so far. At least from last year's boats. I'm sure he takes it out in the middle of the off season all the time between plowing. Lol

I can’t comment on the quick drain feature of the new vovlo motors. I know one member on here can’t remmeber who cracked a radiator on his due to not flushing it all the way. But didn’t damage the motor.

My 262 has one of those boatsafe engine hatch heaters and I can tell you it works like a charm. I didn’t take mine out in January. But I ran it in early April. And we had a couple nights in the 20’s and it kept my engine bay at a nice 50 degrees. No way I’d go all winter on it. But nice to get a few extra boating weeks with it.

Yes they do. We have the boatsafe on ours. I sill run a 100 watt light on a timer in the interior area to reduce moisture. Yep California oaky but effective

Haven't winterized yet, but the drain works as advertised. Picked my boat up early this year and water tested when the lows at night were still freezing temps. Push the drain down for 10 minutes to drain all the water, haven't had an issue.

Had mine winterized at Cobalt dealer last year & was surprised that there was a charge for anti-freeze. His answer was he was old school & was just being cautious. The Volvo book that came with the boat does not mention using any anti freeze at all. I think it’s probably fine but as Tuscany recently said, It would be smart to watch closely to see that water drains out.

I have to say that I think Volvo engineering is pretty remarkable for what that’s worth. If I end up winterizing my self, not sure what I will do. Good luck

AJ, sorry missed this post. Thanks for the info. If I do it myself, may call you as I haven’t done it years. I talk a big game but as the time gets here, I get lazy!

Haha BB, I thought about taking out last January, but I couldn’t chip a big enough hole in the lake to launch.🤣..
It drains in about 10 seconds. All of the water. No need to be afraid and add antifreeze to something that doesn’t have water in it to begin with. I guess easy for me to say. My garage is heated, but it’s a gravity dump and the dump manifold is located at the bottom of the block.

The '19 I just took delivery has it. Tried it once - seemed to work as designed. The dealer says they'll "still winterize the old way". I don't disagree with them...just in case...as mine will be unheated in the winter.

Is there a way to retrofit this system to an older Volvo?

Exactly. I'm sure it wont retrofit. I don't even think there's a aftermarket kit to do that. I know you can make something like that. I've seen it in used boats and utube. And I started at the Holiday Inn last night. Lol
