Re: Umbrella for R series
Tbully,
In your sketch, the screw thread appears to be on the opposite side as the photo. Was that just an oversight? How does the umbrella fit into this? Specifically, is the umbrella fitting into the 1.375" inner diameter snugly or is it fitting over the 1.5" diameter snugly?
Lastly, for those interested in buying one to use a non-cobalt umbrella, what umbrella were you hoping to purchase? Most Lowes/Home Depot umbrellas don't have the push button release that this appears to be designed for.. Instead, they are usually designed to go into a weighted base that uses a locking thumbscrew. I imagine I'd want to replicate the locking thumbscrew in the "aftermarket umbrella" version, but would that interfere with any vinyl or anything? I don't own a R* boat to design this around, so you guys and gals have to assist me...

Re: Umbrella for R series
Ok, I just looked more closely at the boat show pic and I think it looks like it slides over the 1.5" outer diameter.
But it is also pretty clear that the umbrella is not your standard lowes umbrella - it's been cutoff at the knees just below the crank handle and then fitted with this special end that snaps into the part you have to screw into the ski pylon.
Tbully, is there enough space in the ski locker to store the umbrella *with* this end attached? What's the advantage of having to install the umbrella in 2 stages (first thread in the adapter and then snap in the umbrella)?
It might be easier for me to just make a tube that semi permanently attaches to a Lowes umbrella (that you guys would have to trim to height) as opposed to trying to make multiple stainless parts (with really hard to find stainless tubing sizes, I might add).

Re: Umbrella for R series
I will send more pics tomorrow. The umbrella separates from a (umbrella/manufacture included) 36” piece. This is a fairly standard piece that comes with patio umbrellas. So everything fits in the locker with ease.
You’re right. I accidentally swapped the machined end with the end where the “bolt” thread is at. Whoops! Haha! I will fix that tomorrow too.

Re: Umbrella for R series
OK everyone. I updated the drawing and took a shot of the umbrella on the pylon.
It looks like they had to machine the end to slip inside the umbrella a bit. So, your miles may vary depending on your umbrella choice. The 36" piece I spoke of earlier is throw-away. It comes with the umbrella to mount in a normal sand-filled base, etc.
The umbrella manufacture is Treasure Garden - http://treasuregarden.com/
Hope this helps.

Re: Umbrella for R series
Umbrella slips in to pylon. The machined part is so that the pylon can slip under the plastic part of the umbrella. If you look close, I think you’ll see what I mean. If not, I’ll grab a different pic.

Re: Umbrella for R series
Tbully, if the entire pylon was 1.5" od, would it be a really loose fit into the boat side receiver? In other words, is the 1.675 a nice snug fit?. I'm having a really hard time finding 1.675 od x 1.375 id stainless tube. It's definitely not a normally produced size. I can get it in aluminum or regular steel, but not stainless.. At least that I've found yet.

Re: Umbrella for R series
Perhaps it was machined down and polished as well? I’m guessing it’s the same stock they make the ski pylon out of.
I hope to get to the boat tomorrow and we’ll do a comparison measurement for you.
The umbrella fits snugly inside the pylon. I haven’t put the pylon on the boat yet, however. I’m guessing the OD could be a little larger/smaller assuming the ID is right for the umbrella to fit tightly.
