The manual calls for regular. I do know there is a sensor in my wife’s DI 6.2L that detects knock and retards timing for safety. I’m guessing VP has the same protection. Personally, I run non-ethanol 91 octane. 11.5:1 compression seems a little high to risk 88 octane.

I will say, it can get confusing when researching the 6.2 VP engines. The old and new look very similar.

The new 6.2 Gen V architecture discussed at the beginning was introduced at the Miami boat show recently. There is not a lot of info out on them yet.

Still amazes me the direction Merc is going. From a boats.com article...

"It’s fascinating that the embrace by Volvo Penta of these GM engines and their associated technical features represent the exact opposite philosophy espoused by Mercury Marine, the chief rival to Volvo Penta in the gas engine market. In fact, Mercury explicitly claims these very features–direct injection, aluminum block, variable valve timing, mandatory closed cooling–add no value to a marine engine, and are the reason that, rather than buy and marinize the GM engines, Mercury designed its own MerCruiser 4.5-liter V6 and 6.2-liter V8 engines."

To me, just the fact that they will rev to 6000 rpm vs 4800 rpm is huge.

Yes...it is a technological feat. VP developed an amazing marine engine. 430 HP from a closed cooled, higher revving, flatter torque curve, direct fuel injected, variable valve timing aluminum small block! (well GM did the legwork :D )
....and then they develop the forward drive on top of that.

Those Swedes are running away with the market. Merc, please step up your game!

Ilmor has a 6.2 that looks interesting also, but I don't know anyone that has experience with one.

Ytmsn wrote: Fri Mar 16, 2018 3:11 am As far as I know there isn't an iron block 6.2 from GM. The 6.2 that Merc came up with may be.
That is freaking sweet if it is literally a marinized LS3. Although I'm skeptical that's what the VP is, as the LS3 is a Gen 4 engine, and was originally released in 2008. What Tusc is saying about it being a Gen 5 released in 2015 makes me wonder if it's the newer LT1 instead. Either way, that's a hell of a power plant.

If I we're buying a new boat I'd be all over the VP 6.2. Merc who?

Either LT-1 or L-86.
I don't know, but I would bet it's the truck version L-86.
http://www.gmpowertrain.com/engines/6-2l-l86.html

Well, those coming up to Buffalo this summer can get a ride. For a single unit, the engine will knock you off of your feet. But I do think the props are for the 380. It always flashes redline warning on the tach at WOT over 50 mph.I am always loaded with 77 gallons of fuel, ten gallons of water, and at least four people. Experienced boaters may have a better idea of loads vs. usual RPM.
I'm still not sure what You'll be riding in, a 380/430. My dealer says 380.
It was one of the very first 6.2l engines installed at the switchover from 6.0 to 6.2l.
Flash sticker says 380. Emissions plate on the block says 321kmax (430) as well as the engine hat sticker.
I would love for someone with a 380 6.2l to take a picture and post their emissions engine tag.

This is a transcript of a phone message from Volvo USA at I thought I would share.. It's a mess, blame it on Apple.

🤣🤣🤣, no, but he is the one to decipher it correctly!🤣
If I fill in the blanks, he says that they are emission sticker specific.

As far as Merc, I think we can all agree that they are concentrating on developing and building top shelf outboard technology as a priority.

Hello All -

New member here. In the process of purchasing a new (but 2017) R7 with the 430 VP. This thread has gotten me a bit shaken up, sadly. I was under the false impression that all 17's had the new 6.2 with VVT, etc.

However, I do believe the boat I have a deposit on is an early 2017 and likely a 6.0. Obviously the sales terms (price) drives some of this and I'm happy to share that privately. But, if you're put in my position, what would your inclination be? Stick with the '17? Or is the newer tech (and build wait) worth it? It's a well equipped boat for being a dealer stock. The deal is decent but not overwhelmingly, IMO. Thoughts?

.
+1....based upon the GM marine application website. The engine that VP marinized is the 6.2 liter L86 truck engine found in the Silverado and Sierra, not the 6.2L LT1 found in the Corvette.
(btw, it says premium recommended for the L-86, but not required (like the LT1))

PSS, to correct an earlier post, the pic of the LS3 on the first page is a Gen IV block and older technology. The current VP's are based on Gen V tech.

I don't know if you have read around but rumor is all the '18 r series have been sold out. So unless you can find a dealer that has one slotted you won't be able to walk into a dealer and build an 18 from scratch. I personally don't think it is enough for me to jump at it. The 6.0 is also a great motor that has helped sell a ton of the new R series. I'd say if you are getting a good deal on a left over 17 I'd go for it. But I am not the one spending the 100+ grand :D

And welcome aboard! either way I don't think you could go wrong. And glad to see another potential Cobalt owner!

Thanks grace. I don't want to muck up this thread too much (interesting topic) but appreciate your thoughts.

I too have heard that the 18's are pretty much done. I'll be a Cobalt owner either way. I just may have to wait a bit longer. :-( We'll see! Thanks for the welcome!

(Great board, btw. Good discussions and nice group of people....happy to be here!)

Hey tbully. So glad you found us. And congrats on your new baby to be delivered soon! :D

If it were I, I would check with the dealer and manufacturer asking for the newer technology to be installed in your R series...especially for the amount of money you are paying. Get EXACTLY what you want. (if it's on the lot already, well then you'll have a tough decision to make)

Honestly, I'm kind of surprised the 2017's still had the 6.0 liter power plants installed. Great motor, but my preference would be-- hands down, the VP 6.2 380 HP with either a duo prop drive (or forward facing drive if wake surfing is the primary use). '....and if money is no object, get the 430 horse

Also feel free to start a new thread (if you have time) with an introduction. We LUV them! (and pics) :D :D :D

Again, welcome aboard mate!
