Who has experience with R4 surf?

Post by bfishervet »

I am likely upgrading to a new R4 Surf and having difficulty gathering information or reviews from other owners. I currently have a CS23 surf that we enjoy but, frankly, does not have enough storage, and I feel as the kids get older and bigger, the R4 would serve us for more years to come. My lift will not support an R6 or 8, and frankly, I think the R4 is big enough for my family (price tag is plenty big as well).

Who has experience with the R4 surf? How is the wave and ride? The CS sits a little lower than I like. Prior to this, we had an old Cobalt (95), and it was a tank. The ride sold me on Cobalt forever.

How do the surf gates compare to the tabs on my current setup?

Anyone who can share personal experiences with the R4 surf (good or bad) would be appreciated!

We're nearly ready to order a 2025 R4 Surf. We have a 2007 Mastercraft X15 which we use to run around, tube, wakeboard, and surf. We test drove a R4 Surf in October and it was clear the R4 Surf made a better wake and it was much easier to set up - thanks to 18 years of advancements/controls. Although we didn't test the boat in rough water, the ride was nice while crossing over our own wake multiple times. Of course this is a comparison between our X15 which is lighter and has a shallower dead rise than the R4 Surf. We don't need the head so we like the R4 Surf but considered the R6 Surf. Hoping to get them to agree to at least 25% off MSRP..... Watching boats advertised online overt the past 6 months seems to indicate slow sales - so hopefully they will come to the table with a fair price. Love to hear what discounts off MSRP have been in year 2024.

So glad you found us DanUSA.

Always wondered how the R4 surf compared to the X15. We almost went with an X15 but the shallow deadrise would not work for our boating needs on Lake Erie.

20% off of MSRP should be a given with 25% being pretty aggressive. I’ve not heard of much above 25% while on the forum. Let us know how it works out if you are able to purchase.

And welcome aboard, mate!

Can’t speak to an R4 surf but in terms of MSRP % off new with the rebates Cobalt was offering early summer and then again this late fall I was quoted 28-30% off MSRP on a new R4. Since last fall boat sales have not been great from my understanding and this past summer was the first time Cobalt ever started offering “rebate programs” for folks to buy and just recently I saw they just kicked off another rebate program leading into 2025 on leftover 2024 models. If i were you I would be shooting for 30% off on an in stock model and at least 27% on an order. Boat sales are slow and it is a buyers market right now if you ask me
