CS23 on Lake Tahoe?

Post by New2cobalts »

Hi CS23 owners, I'm new to Cobalts but hoping to get a boat soon for Lake Tahoe. I've heard that the CS23 is great but may be a bit light for the 2-3 ft. waves and higher winds (>15 mph) that can come up fairly frequently on the lake. I'd love to hear your experience with this question and with the boat in general. I'd love to hear any input!

Thanks!

2-3' constant waves, you will probably want an R5 or if you can afford R7.

For its size the CS23 is the "driest" boat (for on-board passengers) offered today, but in that environment the taller gunnels the R5/7 and just general longer heavier boat will provide a less nerve-racking experience.

As a CS23 owner I would agree with this. There is going to be a big difference between a CS23 and a R5/R6 is that environment in terms of enjoying your time cruising....

I am on Tahoe and my R7 is great for just about everything you want to do on the lake. Are you planning to just use the boat for cruising or mainly water sports? Do you plan to stay close to home or are you going to travel to the other side of the lake?

A CS23 is fine for Tahoe. It is around the same size as my 24' Wellcraft that I had before and I used for almost 20 years on Tahoe. That being said, my R5 is a huge improvement.

I would also take into account how many people will typically be on the boat with you, especially for long runs. At least my experience is two people can be fun in heavy chop....6-8 people will stress you out more, the smaller the boat.

Thanks all for the replies. I forgot to turn notifications on so I'm just catching up now. We'd be wanting it mostly for shorter to medium length cruises, e.g. from North shore (Tahoe Vista) to Emerald Bay and back. Not generally across the lake. Plus tubing and possibly water-skiing.

Looking at the weather conditions, I get the impression winds over 15 mph come up frequently on summer afternoons. Family of 5 adults, could have more at times...

If anyone knows of a newer R5 for sale in the area, please let me know!

Thanks.

Oddly enough there are two for sale, look on CL, I actually bought my last boat from this broker, same guy that owns Auburn Outboard Marine.

One is a surf model other isn't, they are on boat trader as well. Are you in Tahoe or close by? These are listed in Sac.

North shore to Emerald Bay is not a short trip! Definitely don't want to do that when it's windy!

Agreed, R5 would be much better suited.
