Compare 242 and 262

Post by PugetBoater »

I have some updated info on my 2004 262 purchase that I shared in the new member intro area. The seller's new R8 surf is delayed, so I am not able to take delivery until possibly May. I just looked at a 2008 242 that was in great condition from the same dealer. It had many upgraded options, sink console in the head, heaters, premium sound, 8.1 Gi/DP. The 242 interior was in better condition and had 370hrs, which was similar to the 262. I haven't yet gotten to test drive the 242 and it will be about $15k more, but it will be available within weeks. I'm curious what others think about the comparison between the 242 and 262. I have a family of five and the extra size of the 262 is nice, but it isnt too much more. I plan to spend most of time around Seattle, Lake, WA but may trailer to other lakes in Washington or Idaho a couple times a year.

It would be a downgrade. ;)

Honestly both are great. One major factor to consider is the loss of seating from a rear side entry like the 242. Trim tabs are also something to consider more importantly with a side entry as most of your passenger load will be on the port side requiring the port tab to be lowered for an even keel ride.

If you can find a 2005-2010 272 I'd highly recommend that particular model. Its actually the same length and hull bottom as the Iconic 262 but with the 242 style interior layout. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

I personally like the side walk thru. I can hold on to the arch for balance when water is rough.
I think the biggest difference might just be the extra size. I've never been on a 262, but I'm guessing its like going from an R3 to a R5.

That's funny K. We are the opposite. Not fans of the side walk thru due to loss of seating and storage on that starboard side. causing constant listing to the port (thus the trim tab solution). Plus we didn't like how the bow seating was changed for less seatin'g/storage. The 262 is yacht certified meaning no capacity limit. There are times we have had 13-14 kids on her. Great to have options though depending on your boating needs.

Thank so much for all of the great thoughts. The 262 definitely drove well and I too noticed the reduced bow room between the 242 and the 262. I have a test drive scheduled for the 242 in a few days, so I will get to have a real comparison. That 272 in the Craigslist ad is a great looking boat. I see the pros and cons of the side walk through. The other feature differce I noticed on the 262 is the stationary captains seats. Appreciate the insights and helpful links!

I signed the papers today for the 242. It was in much better condition than the 262, and most importantly available now. Hope to take possession in a couple of weeks. Thanks for all of the info and help in the comparisons!

First Cobalt I got to drive was a 242. I'm sure you're going to be happy.
Congratulations. Great looking boat.
