Surf swim step came loose

Post by brandboat23 »

Has anyone has the bolt in the surf flip down swim step come loose? This is a brand new boat and surpised to see this bolt come loose and fall out? See photo. Any temporary solutions to secure until can take to dealer next week for repairs?

That's a new one for me. I'd be tempted to go to a local hardware store and rig something to keep in in place until getting the "official" hardware from Cobalt. I don't know if there's a plastic washer or something as part of the assembly, but looking at the other side should help figure out what best to do for a temporary fix.

The exact same thing happened to me (2021 R8 Surf). I’m actually dropping it off at the dealer tomorrow for the warranty repair (among a couple other things). One of the stainless rear bars on my swim deck busted at two of the welds and the other has a stripped bolt at the middle bracket. I’ll let you know what, if anything, I find out next week.

This actually happened toward the end of last season. We just had to firmly push the bracket toward the other side in order to get it back in to place. Even though it is not locked in place and the motor doesn’t work, it hasn’t moved on us.

Ick. I wonder if Cobalt switched suppliers or materials in swim step design? This seems like the kind of failure that should be (and used to be) rare.

happened to us within 4 weeks of having the boat. R8S. We now only keep is down when actively using it, as it crashing against waves in the lake all day down while not moving will break it.

Still haven't noticed you on the lake.
Our pin broke two years ago. We got a new one under warranty but haven't installed it. When waves are crashing, swim step moves, but there's no damage to anything, so we don't worry. I'll install the new pin when I put the boat up for sale, which may be never or not in my lifetime.

The knob bent within the first two weeks of ownership. Looks like a $200+ part. The step is still functional but doesn’t lock in place. Seems like plenty of others have had these issues.

I had this problem on our R7 surf and again on our R8 surf with the electric platform. On the R8 the motor almost fell into the lake :). They aren’t installing it correctly in the factory. I have a great dealer and after they repaired it no more problems.
