Best Anchor?

I'm sure there is no right answer, but at the risk of starting WWIII, what is the consensus opinion on anchor type and size for a 272? I'm in the midwest, so it's a mix of rock, sand, and a fair amount of weeds later in season.

Thanks,
Eric

I have a Fortress FX 7 anchor with 6’ of chain that is only 4lbs but holds like it weighs 100lbs. It will easily hold my R5 with a Cobalt 240 tied to me, sometimes I can’t have a couple boats tied up to our R5 and it still holds fine. I boat in a sandy or muck bottom river that has current and it still hold fine even in the wind. Just make sure you let out enough anchor line, if you are pulling your anchor you don’t have enough line out. Some on here will recommend using a box anchor.

I also have a Fortress FX7 but I use 20' of 1/4" chain since we are on lake Tahoe and it gets very windy and you get better hold with more chain.

Whatever you do...no box anchors!

We have a bunch of bottom types in MN too, and I went with a Richter anchor after doing the same type of research. Looks a little different, but has always worked well for us:

Second jhnmdahl, I like my richter 18 lb. Don't forget the requisite at least 6ft chain between the anchor and the rode.

I was going to get a Richter but we have problems keeping things nice and I could tell the seats were against the idea

For what it’s worth, I’ve been really happy with the Box Anchor. I used it along with the Anchor Buddy for a couple of my Malibu boats that were 24’ and it held perfectly, even on windy days. Small box anchor is rated for up to 30’, but you could go large.

Advantages of the Box Anchor over the Richter, which I used prior to, were that it doesn’t use chain and folds up and stores in a good vinyl bag. If you add on the anchor buddy as pictured below, then it really absorbs the wind and keeps the anchor in place.

Last year we had 5 boats tied together and all had anchors out and the only one that saved us and held us was the large box.

I can verify that statement. I would also like to add that it was a flat solid rock bottom much like a concrete parking lot, not the normal bottom 99.9% of us see. That box anchor caught a crack and held us tight.

Interesting how box anchors are so polarizing. I've considered getting one for our stearn / secondary anchor. We just have a large fluke for the front and a smaller one for the back.

I have used several types of Anchors and a small box anchor for the bow with a baby box for the stern on my R7 works best on Tahoe.
