I have been reading here through a lot of posts and learning a lot (thank you!) In doing so I am getting impression that a large majority of Cobalt boats are on lakes and not in the more open waters of oceans/gulfs. Am I getting the wrong impression and if not should I rethink out R6OB choice. We will be in SW and planning on day trips all up and down the coast and probably trailer across to do ICW and keys. Of course I am a huge fan of Cobalt quality etc but dont want to buy a boat ill suited. Case in point I went to Dana Point harbor this weekend in California here and I dont think I saw a single Cobalt in a slip.

I'm a huge Cobalt fan, but we're on lakes only. I had a friend who would take his ski boat out from Port Everglades, FL, but only on calm days.
Another buddy of mine had a Boston Whaler, and it was great in open seas. Center console and dual out boards are more important on large waters. Grady White?

Thanks Krob! Looked at both of those but they just don't have back area that is nice to relax in. Most if not all of our boating will be done in sight of land so not necessarily planning to go way out at least not yet. Of course a lot depends on sea state, I get that as I see pontoons and tritoons head out into the gulf all the time lol.

If that is the case you have zero worries with any Cobalt.

The term “ lake boat” is used to describe only dealing with other boats wakes and light chop. Usually low freeboard type boats.

If your dealing with swells and deep water wave action you adjust your speed, trim and make good decisions on when to go out.

Personally… unless you get into 8,000 lbs ( wave crushers ) and up with higher freeboard for security …there all considered lake boats.

Stay with your vision ! R6 will be great.

Or look at the SC series with a Outboard. You will be fine.

LOL already underway, coming here we went from looking at a new Robalo 247 to a Cobalt R6

@cmattj Thank you for the feedback, that is a good point about the wave crusher. Staying with the vision!

I’m using our 262 on the Chesapeake bay and it handles the 1’-2’ chop well. It’s heavy enough to not get bounced around while the hull does a good job cutting thru the waves. Going with the OB for saltwater is definitely a better option.

No Lakes to boat on in my area. All boating for us is in the Gulf of St Lawrence, Northumberland Strait, or the adjoining rivers.
Like all boating, it is weather dependent. We use the 26 SD in up to 2.' chop, 20 kt winds. After that, the boat can do it, but the crew says lets go home and relax on the deck!

The boat comes home with us everyday, so the closed loop cooling and a quick flush means salt water use doesn't bother me one bit.

I think you'll be happy with a Cobalt

I have an 21, R3 300 hp- live on sag, harbor long island - there are tons of Cobalts in the area. I have even taken mine across to CT and fishing to Montauk in calmer days w 1-2 ft waves and i have never regretted having a Cobalt versus a center console like a Whaler. Our R3 was the compromise between wife that likes to go lounging and kid that likes fishing. Soon moving to a R6 380 IO because of the need to have a head for longer colder days. The boat you should buy depends on the use you will give it. If mostly offshore with larger waves, then I think you should consider a higher freeboard and 2 engines.

While living in Florida, I boated with two different Cobalt boats. The last one a 2007 252, ran from St. Lucie inlet to Palm Beach Inlet offshore in calm seas and 2-3ft slop. Your new R6 OB will serve you great from what you described. Envy you in SW Florida, my favorite trips were to trailer the 252 to Sanibel Island for a week vacation. During the 5 years owning it and living there, only saw 3 other Cobalts in my area in Martin County.

Saw only two in the Sanibel island area. Got smoked running to Cabbage Key in the ICW by a 343….

But I will tell you this, the looks and thumbs up and “wish I would have bought a Cobalt” always re-affirmed my choice.

You will not be unhappy, that R6 will serve you and your family well, heck, I would run it to Bimini on a calm day..
