Used 2008 220 Feedback

Post by BWhale »

Hi,

I am new to the site and exploring some boat options. Been around boats for a long time, mostly with Boston Whalers in the ocean and also lakes, so outboards and all-around capabilities. Now looking for similar all around lake boat that can handle water sports, has a smoother ride, more speed/sport and Cobalt is certainly near the top of the list. From my limited exposure to Cobalt and doing some info digging, they have a similar "over build it" mentality to the older Boston Whalers (not the newer ones unfortunately).

My Cobalt search is centered on a used boat in the 22-23 ft range, so the 200 and 220 fit the bill. Going the V-8 route in the 5.7 or 8.1 range is the preferred engine direction to give some performance, audible excitement and all around usefulness. These models in the 10-12 year old range are generally around the high $20's to mid 30's range.

I found a private sale opportunity here in upstate NY for a 220 and wanted to get your feedback. This is a 2008 with an 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI and dual prop setup. The engine has 590 hours and specs say 375 HP with a top speed in the mid 50's range . Boat appears in good shape and looks like it has been well maintained and kept on a lift so very clean. Asking $ 34K.

With all of the covid boat shortages this seems like a nice package. Thoughts from others on this setup? What should I be looking out for as far as wear items or areas of concerns? Are the engine hours pretty high? Limited experience with in-boards but know merc-cruiser but not so much on the VP.

Thank you for your time and look forward to your feedback and experience.

Hey BW…so glad you found us!

That boat will sell fast at that price. The rarer GXI motor has 420 hp. The 8.1 Gi has 375. Both are great deals at that price.

An average boating season has roughly 50 hours per year. Similar to 10-12,000 miles per year on a vehicle for average age. 590 hours is a little lower than average for a 13 year old boat. Does it come with a trailer?

I would jump on this my friend if it’s in the condition you mentioned. Any pictures or link?

And welcome aboard mate!

Is that the blue and yellow boot stripe 220? That has a 430hp gxi in it. The Guy as the hp listed wrong. Not sure if it had a trailer. That's not a bad boat.

No, 1 color red. I will check to see if the engine is the Gi or GXi, a 45 HP difference if just a little bit.

There is a huge performance difference Between the 2. I've had both. Any questions fire away. I had a 200 and 220.

Big Block, what accounts for the HP difference between the 2? Both are fuel injected. 45 HP is a lot of extra to get on a normally aspirated engine.

How is the hole shot between them? Or is it top end power from more revs?

Diff cam and throttle bodies. I think the injectors are the same. Ecu program is diff. The gxi is better at home shot and top end.

A 220 hits a wall at 57mph anyways.

With as much midrange torque BBCs make even the Gi will rearrange the crew on take off or if you crack the throttle during part throttle cruise compared to a SB

Hey thats why I only mentioned "SB" and left the muscle house base V6 out!!... ;)

OP I hope you can see some sarcasm in these last couple post. A 240 will get you there faster than an oar and would be a great engine for a 500 acre lake.

Finally saw this 220 in person and it ended up being the GI motor, not the GXI, so the 375 Hp was correct. In pretty good shape on exterior but with quite a bit more interior vinyl wear than expected, and this can get expensive in a hurry. Put that one on hold for right now and planning to check out a 2010 200 with the the 5.7 Gi this week before it gets winterized.

BBP, what is the blue one that you asked about earlier?

BBP, I just figured it out that is your boat in the Craigslist ad. That is a really nice setup and 1 of 6 that year? How come you are selling?
