Mercury introduces a 600hp V12 Verado!

Very cool new features such as a two speed transmission and just the gear case turns, not the entire outboard.

Yamaha and other are clearly a step behind in the outboard world.

My dream boat for Florida would be a 42 foot Scout or something similar with two of these V12 Verados for power.

It will be interesting if the two speed transmission or any other innovations from this engine will trickle down to the smaller engines soon.

My dream boat for Florida would be a 35 foot Scout or something similar with two of these V12 Verados for power. I will try my best to make it happen in 2023 when my youngest graduates.

Saw this too. Love your plan BTW, but it needs to be the 53" Scout and 4 of these engines

I already edited my post to a 42 footer, lol. That 53' Scout is out of my price range for the time being unless I sell our lake home but we can all dream.

Damn. This thing might actually tempt me into an outboard in the future.

Thats what I'm doing :)

The gear case being the only thing that turns is pretty cool. Wonder how pricey these will be?

I wonder what the price will be. My bet is each will be close to $100K

100k is a safe bet. I think they spent over $1.5B in development...

Retail is about $77k and they weigh 1260 pounds compared to about 680 pounds for a 400R or 450R. Their target market I think is for boats 42 feet or larger. 5 years ago nobody would think of putting outboards on a 60 foot boat but soon it will be common. I'd love to see how twin 600's would perform on one of these Scouts. :D

Stern drives are a dying market. Outboards and inboards are taking over.

Seven Marine was $90k
These bad boys won't be under $120k each. Can't wait!

I saw this today as well in my email box from Boating mag...unbelievable technology. Thanks for posting MnLB....These Mercs are bad to the bone.
MSRP will be roughly $77,000.

It's just crazy where this technology is going. We had a 39 Venture with twin Yamaha F350's for 11years. The rotating lower unit and two speed transmission are interesting to me. This is essentially a pod system like the Zeus. Pods were a new rage several years ago, but in the marine and offshore environment, the cost to maintain them just didn't make sense. Maneuverability and efficiancy are amazing but the kind of duty cycles the boats are subject to, the simple straight shaft and rudder have proven to be the most reliable and cost effective choice. With twin engines and a bow thruster, you can maneuver around the dock almost as well. The one thing you can't do is duplicate the hover mode that the pods can do. Pods work, and they work well, it just drastically increases the cost of maintenance. Especially if they are sitting in salt water.

I am curious to see how the two speed transmission will hold up. Climbing waves off shore is such a dynamic load application that changes rapidly. It's no where near like an 18 wheeler climbing a hill on the road. About 30 years ago Detriot Diesel tried to make 2 speed transmissions work in some of their DDEC 8V92 and 12V92 setups. It just wouldn't work. These new Verado's in a lake environment or Intercoastal waterway application probably works well. The engineering and technology is so advanced now, and I'm sure they have it figured out. Offshore, i'd be skeptical. Either way, the annual maintenance on these things is going to be pricy. Outboards used to be the cheaper alternative to power. Now some of these engines cost 80K+. It's cool stuff for sure, but they are not the lower cost lower maintenance option they used to be.

Having said all that, if I had the money, I would have a 41 Bahama with twin 600 Verado's or twin Seven marines on it!

I'd love to see the 2 speed transmission trickle down to the sterndrive line. It wouldn't have to be a big step, just enough to add 10% to the top end speed while lowering rpms by 1,000 or so. Aside from the cost and maintenance that would be like having your cake and eating it too.

Volvo buys 7 Marine a few years ago, shocking the marine industry as they have a pretty conservative reputation, and shuts it down late last year as it no longer reflects their environmental philosophy. Not to be outdone, Mercury introduces a new V12 outboard a month or so later, taking the top step at the Coolest Toys on the Water Olympics!

Gotta love America!

Another nice vid.

How about first service at 200 hrs and next larger one at 1000 hrs. I think they thought of cost of maintenance on this!
Has to be odd driving a OB and not seeing them move. Lol
Hope they have a rudder Guage 😂😂
