Longer Wiring for Fish/Depth Finder.

I need some advice on wire length/gauge
I’m going to be installing a new Garmin Striker 5CV fish/depth finder on my 98’ 200 soon. I’ll be mounting the display up by the helm, but the Garmin’s factory power cable is far too short to run from the battery inside the engine bay.
I have some leftover heavy duty 16-18 ga. wire from another project I want to use. Will this be fine to use, or will I need to use larger gauge wire? I’ll only be running it about 12 feet from the battery to the factory cables, so it won’t be too long.
