Sunbrella Cover Rehab or buy new?

This fall we purchased a 2001 226 which came with a custom mooring cover made from sunbrella. The cover is not exactly waterproof. I got a gallon of 303 waterproofing and it seems to have helped, but it is still letting a good bit of moisture through.

Question for the group: is it worth spending several hundred $$$ on several coats of waterproofing on the existing cover or just bite the bullet and get a new one?

I would love to hear others experiences with sunbrella in the past.

Thanks!!

Hey ST. Welcome to the CobaltChat forum. So glad you found us!

A good cover is worth it's weight in gold. Any pics of this leaking cover? It may help us diagnose.

How 'bout a pic of your cobalt?

Again, welcome aboard mate!

I've never had a cover leak after using 303 or starbrite water repellent.

Hmmmm. Thanks BBP

I was concerned that the gallon wasn’t enough, I’ll get another gallon and hit it again in the spring time.

Can you put a sunbrella cover into an industrial sized washer? I cleaned it with simple green, but wasn’t super pleased with the result.

Here’s the boat, albeit with the morning covers and not the full mooring cover.

I’ll get a picture of the cover on the boat today or tomorrow when I pick it up to winterize it.

Some use a large washer. I would never buy that's me. I wouldn't use simple green but that's me. They make special cleaners I use those but again that's me. A gallon should have been more than enough I would think. But try another what the heck. But it maybe time.

How are you applying the 303? I had a cover that went 15 years, made of Sunbrella. When I started using 303 (after about 3 years, I was pouring and using a sponge to wipe it on. I used a gallon for a 20’ boat. One year I tried a generic bottle sprayer. Wet the whole cover down with a half gallon with the same water proofing effect.
