Hi guys, nice to meet you all. This is my first post and I need some help. I am planing to buy a 1991 cobalt 222 with a 7.4L V8 bravo. First I live in Colombia, So this kind of imported boat is rare to find. I need to know your opinion... or if this kind of year and motor could become a major headache. The boat seems to be in regular condition with some dirt because the last owner abandoned for the last 3 years without any cover or engine. Seems to me it has 242 Hrs. Also has always been in sweet water... Calima Lake. Price is usd 10.000. Boats in here are much more expensive if you consider around 37% tax. What do you think... should I hop on this classic or go for a newer and smaller outboard engine boat with similar budget? Appreciate your help! Thanks

Welcome to the board!
That’s not a bad looking boat for its age. Looks like it just needs a lot of love.
That said, I don’t think I would pay $10,000 for it here in south Louisiana. Love shouldn’t cost money but boat love does!
Good luck!

Mercruisers are known to be dependable but what if you do need work done? Can you do it yourself? Are parts available?
I have run into those very issues with my Volvo here in south La.
There may be a reason the previous owner let it sit for 3 years

Welcome going forward.
That’s a great combo as if it runs well and doesn’t have a tired off color bravo she will give you great cruise speed and fun top end.
Get the the compression on the engine checked , and if possible a leak down of cylinders to determine health. ( just Incase it’s been cooked).
Have the drive pulled and check the gimble housing as these years were prone to wear.
Above inspections won’t cost more than 400$ as it can give you a glimpse to stay or walk.
Then lastly
Have them check the splater what looks like oil drops on the back engine compartment.

.
And if you pull the trigger have the impeller and all fluids changed.
Keep us posted.

‘91 is wood construction, definitely get a survey and have the transom checked with a hydrometer. If it’s dry and the engine has good even compression then go for it. That’s assuming you can do all your own work. To pay someone to get that boat fully serviced won’t be cheap.

Hey A500.
Welcome to the Cobaltchat forum. So glad you found us!
Yes make sure the wood stringers or wood transom are not rotted.
That splatter might just be mold but yes have it checked.
Hours are low. That’s good.
All great advice above.
Again welcome aboard mate!
