Feelin’ HOT HOT HOT!

So we had to get the tow of shame in today. Got across our lake and the overheat alarm went off, gauge read 200 so I shut it down and threw out the hook. Visual inspection didn’t show anything wrong. Best guess is the intakes got clogged up leaving our unusually weedy channel and starved the impeller. New one will be here Sunday, I’ll pull the old (new) one out tomorrow. Hopefully I don’t need to go hunting for impeller vanes.

Silver lining, we were close to home. Had it happened a half hour later and we’d have been 17 miles away. Nice couple that lives across the lake from us saw the hatch up and gave us a tow back. Despite towing us home we got a compliment on the boat, lol.

bummer. But why didn't you tie it to the bow eye?

Cleat was fine, it was only a few hundred yards back to the dock.

True. Did you pull it out yet or see any weeds stuck in it when you got back?

How old is that impeller? Sucks to have a day ruined like that.

Yeah, nothing visible, but there was a 3” thick layer of milkweed on the channel and I was trimmed way up because the lake is low. I think the intakes just got covered in swamp basically and starved the sea pump long enough to fry it.

Heading out now to pull it apart and see. Starting with the dreaded compression test 😳, always makes me nervous, even on fresh engines, lol.

Pulled the sea pump off and it looked fine, so I reinstalled. The new one will go on the shelf for next time. I blew all the cooling hoses out, no blockages. I pulled the thermostat out, test ran on the hose and there is zero water getting to the manifolds, so I ordered a new circulation pump, should be here Monday. Didn’t have time for the compression test, I’ll do that when the pump gets here.

Yeah, fingers crossed it didn’t pop the head gaskets. Circulation pump looks original, we’ll see how the vanes look when I pull it.

Recirc. pumps will generally weep water out the front to tell you they're going bad.

Yeah, once I pulled it off I could see it was dripping for a while, all the cover plate bolts were rusted to almost nothing. Definitely the original 24 year old pump. I ran out of time to get it put back together, and my kids started elearning last Wednesday so not much progress since then. I’m hoping to get some time this weekend to put it back together and test.

On a positive note, compression was nice and even, and about what I would expect from a 1000 hour engine.

The coolant bypass hose was about to turn to dust, so I’m using the opportunity to delete it with a couple brass plugs.
