My new ride for the Motorcycle guys

Post by Ytmsn »

I've been Jones after another bike ever since I sold my KTM 1190 R back in the spring. I'm an Adventure Bike guy and have been looking mainly in that segment.

I'm Blessed to have owned several kinds of Adventure Bikes already with the exception the new Honda Africa Twin, so I've been considering one of those. Someday I'll own one.

I really have been shopping a KTM 690 Enduro, but I already have a KTM 350 Six Days that's tagged to link the trails, so I wanted something I could tour around with a bit more and still do some light trail and backroad exploring.

Then I rode a Ducati Multistrada and just about pulled the trigger on one of those, but that got me to looking at the super motard crowd. And then I found this..

A 2013 KTM 990 SMT (Super Motard Touring) For you rider gearheads, it has a Wings exhaust, SAS and canteristimy removal and Rotweiller air box, remap, risers, and a few other farkleblings. Dyno'd at 126 hp @ 476 lbs.

I picked it up last night and did a quick 12 mile ride. My observations so far...
1. This sucker is Faaast
2. Street tires dont bite like knobbies. I tried to launch off the curb from this picture and instantly spun out.
3. The front is heavy steering compared to what I usually ride. Dirt/Adventure bikes are lighter steering.
4. Its loud, but sounds cool. I have some baffles I'm going to put in to quiet it down some.
5. I can get into trouble with this thing! It's a hooligan bike that'll wheelie at the mere suggestion. It may steer heavy, but I can stick the front wheel in the sky up to 3rd gear by just twisting, with no clutch at all!

Yeah. This is going to be fun!

Thanks y'all! I got about 15 miles in tonight after I mowed. I'm thinking I'm going to really like this thing!

I have a meeting with a client in the morning, and its supposed to rain here all weekend. 🙄 it'll be the first weekend we've missed at the lake in a while, and I can hear that fat lady starting to warm her pipes up. Yuck..

Same here. Makes me glad I did the 7hr round trip for a day on the lake last Sunday. Sucks it is going to rain all weekend. TRL is still a nice 84 degrees the last time I checked. But with temps in the low 70s and rain we are staying home.

Dont know much about the KTM, but sounds like it would be a lot of fun.

The Duc was a lot of fun but I've been told they are pretty temperamental and can be a pain. I've never owned one but probably will someday. I will typically own a bike for a year or so before it gets thumped in the head for something else, unless I like it a lot. This little SMT might be one of those!

Out of all the reviews I read there were two editors that kept their long term test bike. That says a lot for guys that ride them for a living!

That's does say a lot.
I only have experience with one multistrada, not a lot of miles, but had no problems. Well, other than keeping the front wheel down.😁

I rode a Honda Africa Twin and can cross that bike off of my "want" list. No power and too top heavy. Eww..

My next bike will be a KTM 690 Enduro R.

Hey Yt, in the “kill 2 birds with one stone” mode, how about just hooking a mower up to your bike, then do 2 fun things at the same time! Your welcome

Yeah... been there, done that. My wife asked for a riding mower so I built her this. It's for sale now. And looow miles!
