New Member from the Greatest Lake

Post by arcticzale »

Hi all,

Long time browser, just now joining in the fun. There appears to be a wealth of information here and I hope to contribute at least as much as I have taken. The wife and I primarily boat on Lake Superior and northern Lake Huron (we're on Whitefish Bay of Lake Superior). We traveled down east to get our Cobalt 282 about 4 years ago out of Lake Winnepesaukee. It's a 2003 with an 8.1GXi Volvo and DP-SM 1.78 drive. It had everything we wanted except for the Captains Call, but I installed that shortly after we brought it home.

I am looking forward to learning about new boating destinations (we'll trailer about anywhere) and the newer models. We enjoy traveling to warmer waters and are considering the R35 or A36 in the near future. It'd be nice to have a generator and berth in the event we get caught out in the weather or decide to overnight in a bay, however the 'Admiral' requires that we have a bowrider and she won't budge on that.

That being said we absolutely Love this boat, it's high Freeboard makes for a great big water day boat. Unfortunately, I only have a couple of pictures of it because the wife is the camera person in our relationship. I'll try to get her to send me some so I can share more later.

Here's a couple for your browsing pleasure, I just became aware that apparently I favor the port side:

Another welcome to you from the lake Erie boating area arcticzale. That freeboard will come in handy for ya.

She’ll be a handful without twins in that size category—especially docking with crosswinds. Practice on some buoys out in the Lake.

Again welcome aboard mate!

(& thanx for the pics!!)

Congrats I was just in your neck of the woods. Shipwreck Museum was awesome. Spent the July weekends in grand marais.
1 question. Why is everything for sale on the shoreline up by you? Oh my!

Welcome from Oklahoma! That's a good looking black 282, so welcome to the Black Boat Mafia too! A 282 with BB twins is in my future. Dont know when, but it'll happen. That's a beauty and yes, more pics!

Thanks for the welcome, might have to hit you up for some Erie boating areas. Been pondering a Put-In-Bay trip.

I'm actually really impressed with the handling of this boat, especially around the docks. I credit the DuoProp, but it could be that the last boat was running a Bravo drive with a high pitch prop and too much engine weight in the rear for its length. Compared to that boat this is a dream. :-)

Glad to know you're around here, I'm really not far from the shipwreck museum, exact opposite side of Whitefish Bay. About 25 miles as the crow flies. Hopefully you had a chance to see Pictured Rocks too. Bring the boat next time and let me know, will be happt to show you around.

Most of the property that I see for sale is stuff that has been in families for a long time and gets inherited by kids who think it's too far away from their lives down state. So they throw a stupid price on it and then it sits for a while. Not sure about Grand Marais, that might not be the case as much as it is around the Bay and St Mary's river.

Welcome from California.

I’m glad you’re enjoying your 282. We have a blast on ours and yes they handle like a small boat, but crush through rough water.

Are you going to keep your front windshield tinted? As you know you’ll have to stand to look over. Wasn’t sure if you do evening boating

More pics and more stories.

Actually, I just removed the tint last week to have a lighter shade installed. I had 5% on the sides and 20% on the front, you're correct it's too dark after dusk. I'm tall so sitting on the bolster is enough to get my eyes over the frame but would prefer to stay low when it gets chilly. I'm going to a 35% now to keep the look, should be a little more forgiving when looking for buoy lights after dark.

Here's a quick story for you:

We were heading to the Soo (Sault Ste Marie) for the 4th of July fireworrks. Got a little delayed with story telling over dinner and the Admiral was a bit hot with me for being behind schedule (hers, not mine). We had some friends of ours aboard who brought their little ones out for the show. As the Admiral is respectfully giving me the quiet treatment to show her disapproval over my timing and the certain disappointment the Littles will have over missing the fireworks, I radioed the lockmaster. Said we were all clear to the MacArthur lock down. Started to enter the lock approach and then this happened:
36612589_10216916473929299_2296125482497736704_n.jpg
This ended up being the best fireworks show we'd ever seen. It was complete with our own private viewing spot. That picked up the Admirals spirits and I was forgiven for my earlier tardiness.

Have a ton more stories of weather and rescues, but this was my favorite since it changed the whole mood instantly. After all, Boating is truly all about the experiences.

Wonderful, great places to see and the other side of Tahquamenon is pretty cool too. Might know a guy who can get you on the private side if it interests you for your next trip. :-)

Awesome waterway! Looks like they got a great seat! Gotta love the 282 bow area.
You’ll have to get some pics up in the Labor Day section!

Welcome from St. Louis/ Table Rock Lake. I love the 282's! If I would of looked a little harder when I bought my boat earlier this year maybe I would of ended up with one. Maybe my next 1 lol.

I will agree that the VP with the duo prop makes it really easy to maneuver a larger size bow rider around the docks. I came from an older 27' with a bravo 1 and it is almost night and day difference at idle speed. Really makes a 27' boat feel like a 20' boat.

Also if you are looking for somewhere to go next summer we are planning on a Cobalt Chat meet up down here on Table Rock next summer. Or if that doesn't work out the Cobalt dealer here puts on a big Cobalt Regatta the last weekend in July each year. This year they had over 75 Cobalts there.
